I have a nikon coolscan

Hi, well if you have used Vuescan a "driverless" program, then unfortunately the unit may have a damaged interface? As this software will/should work without any drivers being installed, as it works as we say "Natively".
However in saying this please ensure you have the latest drivers installed, download from the manufacturers website to be sure.
You did not indicate what operating system you were using, if using Win 7 64 bit, or any 64 bit OS, ensure that the drivers again are installed correctly, installed and setup as Administrator, and you may have to set to OFF, the Driver Signature Check at boot up, to set & check, press F8, at boot up, and select from the bottom of the list, this will ensure that the driver is definitely loaded at boot time.
Always try, install and use, any suspect equipment on another PC, this will "Prove" where the fault lays.
Adapters can always a problem, if possible try WITHOUT any adapters at all. ie: Try on, another or even perhaps, a friends PC that has a Firewire port built in just to prove if the device is actually functioning.

Hi Good day!!! yes based on what you've said you hear something suspicious in your unit. maybe something wrong with the gears. I'll suggest to contact your local technician to check your unit because it is very risky if you open it on your own.

I have a Nikon Coolscann 8000 and a Mac computer.

I have successfully downloaded NikonScan 4.2 on my MacPro running Snow Leopard (10.6.6) and my Nikon LS8000ED seems to work fine. I ran a test scan and it worked with no problem.

Nikon coolscan 8000ed,

Hi.

Please follow the troubleshooting process below.

  1. Check the connection cable to the Nikon Coolscan.
  2. Disconnect coolscan from power, turn the computer off, restart computer, connect back the coolscan.
  3. Do the same above, but also disconnect computer power cord. If the computer is a laptop, then also remove main battery from laptop.
  4. Test using a different USB cable.
  5. Disconnect Coolscan USB cable. Reinstall the Coolscan software. Connect back the scanner when asked by software setup.
  6. If all that does not work, then test the scanner on a different computer (install software Before connecting), and let us know.

Regards.

I have an intel macintosh I

Nikon 4.0.2 isn't supported on 10.5

I suggest you look at VueScan which does work under 10.5 and 10.6 with your scanner, and they have a free download to test first

Scanner works fine EXCEPT I cannot see how to get

Greetings,

Let me first offer the scanner manual:
http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/scanners/LS8000_en.pdf

Starting at page 56, it shows you how to load the holder and the direction to insert it into the scanner.

Starting at page 62, the manual covers the Nikon Scan application... Check out section 3 on page 64. This section explains how to scan more than one image from the holder.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need further clarification.

Nikon scan was unsable to find any active device

I may have a solution for the unrecognized film holder/clunking problem.  The fix is not for the faint of heart, but you can do it yourself and save a bunch of money.  The problem lies in the two rails inside the scanner that the film carrier rides on.  After unplugging you scanner, remove the 8 screws from the rear of the unit and slide the cover rearward about 3/4" and then lift it straight off.  Inside you will see two shiny machined rods running from front to back.  The problem is those two rods have dried up lubricant on them and the film carrier drags a bit during film carrier insertion and/or scans.  The easiest way I found to clean the rods is to remove the front cover (look for screws inside on each side), and then carefully slide those rods out (but NOT all the way) and wipe off what is exposed and then apply a little silicone lubricant to the rods (be very careful to not get any down into the lens area).  Then slide the rods back in and repeat for the portion that is exposed in the rear.  Carefully re-assemble everything and you should be all set.  This fix worked for me on an 8000ED that I purchased used on eBay.  Hope this helps someone.  Brian

My Nikon Coolscan 8000 Ed will not start

Make sure that the computer you are using meets the criteria for the program with both the operating system and hardware. If so, try un-installing the camera software and then re-installing it. Beyond this, the problem can become a little complicated and require you to call the tech support from Nikon. They should know what it required to make their program function properly.

Tray is stuck

The gear train is probably jammed or stripped. You would be best off to send it out rather than mess with it.

You could take it apart, but there will not be much you can do yourself with it. If you mess it up even more, you will increase the repair cost.

When you send the unit out, tell them to send you back the negatives ASAP, and you are willing to pay the postage.

As they say "stuff" happens. This is all part of doing business...
