Hi,

To set a IDE Hard Drive as Slave you would need to change the jumpers/pins on the back of the drive

See this link Here

Most of these externals have no drivers. They are set up to plug & play. If you no longer have the instruction manual, you will need to go on the Seagate Mfg site.

The biggest misconception about the externals is that you have to first format them which is outlined in the instruction manual. The formatting takes a few minutes. Once it is completed the drive will be linked to the computer and you will see it in the formatting window and also in My Computer.

When you format the drive you will also be able to choose which letter the drive will be under. Make sure no other device is assigned the same letter.

If you assign the same letter to two different devices, you may have a conflict and your system will not recognize one of them.

Please check if your HDD is visible in storage management. You must be logged on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group view and modify most properties and perform most computer-management tasks.

To start and use Computer Management on the local computer:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.

The Computer Management window for the local computer is displayed. "Computer Management (Local)" is displayed at the root of the console tree.
  2. In the console tree, expand System Tools, Storage
Then check if your USB HDD is visible under one of next options. This is for windows XP.
If it will be presented there try to right click on this drive and format hard drive. Also please recheck your jumper position. This picture might be very useful c33351b.gif

open a command prompt, go to programs accessories and click on command prompt, type in chkdsk /f/r
then press enter
it will ask you if you want to run this next to the computer starts, say yes then restart the computer. This may take a long time when it starts, but it will fix any bad sectors on the hard drive. Once this is completed hopefully your hard drive will work more proficiently.

I would not play around with it yourself. Even if you match the size, model etc; there is a chip called U-12 which is the ROM bios chip for the drive. That chip contains special startup and initialization information for the drive. Also, if you have defects on the G-list or P-0list you need a recovery company to write that. Sometimes, you get lucky; but, if you need to make sure it s right call an expert http://techrxgb.com usually these types of issues are resolved for $500-$700. Logical issues ... If the drive has to be opened then, you can consider it will run into the thousand area.

Try this:

Click Start> right click on My/Computer> Mange
You should then be displayed with a list of storage devices. Locate your HDD, right click and click format.

OK your hard drive is an ATA drive.
You motherboard will have two hard disk controllers, on the 1st controller the ATA cable will have two connectors - a connector will have the C drive hard disk attached to it and the jumper on the hard drive will be set as the Master drive. You may also have a CD or DVD drive connected to this cable, if so then the CD or DVD drive will be jumpered as a Slave drive.
If the second connector does not have a drive connected, then you can connect the second hard drive to this connector BUT it needs to be jumpered as a Slave drive.
You may elect to connect the second hard drive to the second IDE controller instead on the first controller. If there aren't any drives on the second ATA cable then the second hard drive can be jumpered as either a Master or Slave drive.
If there is a drive on the second ATA cable you need to determine the jumper setting of that drive and then set the jumper on the second hard drive to a different setting. BOTH drives on the same cable CANNOT have the same drive setting.
After installing the second hard drive, check the BIOS configuration of the second hard drive, if the hard drive is detected then when Windows boots up you will see the hard drive and its contents.

make sure the laptop will handle a drive bigger than 130 gig. if not make two partitions when you set it up, bios wont see it but usually windows will. also, sometimes ive found that if i delete the partition a few times it eventually reads right. dont know why but have done it that way several times. you can also download a diskmanager program from thier website which makes an overlay if your bios wont support a 250.
