You're going to need a professional data recovery service to get your files. Just google data recovery companies and find out what they charge. You may get lucky and have one close by.

It is not necessary to buy an exact replacement hard drive. You can even replace the drive with a larger capacity drive. Find a local shop or look online.

Does the drive make any sounds, even a spinning up sound? Are you using it in an external case or just inside your computer?Also, is this a drive you've been using and you have data on it, or is it a new drive?

Chances are your disk is partitioned. If it's your Operating System drive, you should reformat with your OS disc. If it's just a secondary drive, check in Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (Mac/Linux) and you can re-partition the drive as you desire.For windows, do search in the start menu search bat to find disk management, and in mac use spotlight to find disk utility.

ok...this is not a common issue but it can happen ..first of all ..keep in mind that the issue can be just a file crash and not a permanent hdd crash..
this can be fix with a new installation of the OS..(operating System )..
if you try to install the system a few times and the files do not want to be copied into the hdd ...only that is the moment when you have to gave up..and get a new hdd...
things that can happen are ...:
-hdd is stil ok ..but cause a virus or so ...some files are missing and the computer do not boot..up..
the hdd has some 'bads' on it ...and the file upload in order to install the OS is difficult...this require to hook it up in another computer and try to format it clean and try again ..
if the hdd is seen on start up ...as ...ide master ....or secondary master ...or whatever is hooked...it probably has no problems and keep trying to reinstall or repair...
And..of course.., there is the last issue when the hard disk just died...and you can not do a damn thing about ...just get another one ....hook it in the computer ...(the ide or sata bus..and do not forget the powercord..) and with a installation CD with boot-able windows on it ...reinstall the operation system...please be sure you have all drivers cause if you had them on the hdd it will be hard to locate again ...but not impossible ...

your drive is completely shot. their is one trick that you can try, but if it dont work you will need to buy a new hardrive. take your hard drive out of your computer, wrap it up in a plastic bag, as tight as you can, tie it off. put it in your freezer over night, take it out, first thing next morning.. Unwrap it, and let it set at room temp for about 6 hours.. then try it again.. the reason this might work is because inside your hard drive the reader pin is on a very thin piece of metal. Sometimes during the use of your computer this gets really hot and can bend some. causing hard drive issues. Cooling, and re heating the metal inside your HD can sometimes bend it back out where it should be.

Your hard drive is bad. If you are hearing clicking reptitiously it is you head not moving. Sorry about the bad news.

I assume the hard drive is installed inside the desktop computer.
Depending upon the age and make of the motherboard/BIOS, it may not support a hard drive as large as the 250Gb capacity. You maybe able to upgrade the BIOS version to allow it to access the full capacity of this hard drive. Go to the motherboard manufacturer's WEB site to download the latest BIOS firmware.

Had the same problem with my WD2500KS-00MJB0. It also has the (widely reported) defect where the thermal sensor is not reporting correctly (ie 40C when it's just been powered on, and should be reading approx 20C!).

My suspicion is that this line of WD2500KS models has a defective thermal sensor, and after a period of time the thermal sensor fails. When this happens, I suspect that the drive firmware tries to lower the temperature by reducing write speed.

My drive was out of warranty, so I used the 'Customer Loyalty Upgrade' discount on the WD Warranty Check site to get a new 500G drive. I still have the old drive, and some technical knowledge, so I'll see if there's a hardware hack to disable the thermal sensor.

Otherwise, go to the WD site's Warranty Check page, and get yourself a (heavily discounted) Customer Loyalty replacement.

If the drive is a couple of years old and has been on constantly it may be failing. If you have been able to reboot and it works without making noise on its own without being accessed then I'd suggest getting a higher capacity drive to transfer your vital stuff to it before it goes totally. This isn't comforting to know you may not be able to access your data, or even if it is in warranty, they won't warranty your data or restore it for you. If the drive stays on for a shorter period of time. try to copy the important stuff directly to your PC's hard drive if you have the space, then backup to CD or DVD's. There are services out there who can resore your data to DVD from the drive but it can become expensive and they have to take the drive apart to do it so it's gone for a while. Hope it doesn't get to that point.

To be sure your hard disk is ded or just have probs in the casing just try to remove the hd from the casing and connect it directly to the system if its 2.5 tb u would have 2 hard drive orthree please connect all of them to gether to your system other wile it could become unalocated
....
if it works u have prob in the casing so just change the case .
but before going through all this just connect the hdd and go to disk management by right clicking on the my computer icon go to manage and then diskmanagement if itshown there as forgen or unalocated just let me know i will tell you what to do

Hard drive can make a nice paper weight. It's toast.

No diagrams or parts. WD may be able to repair it for you.

..as i know when HDD start beeping ( internal or portable ) that indicate problem with the Hard Drive (HDD)..so nothing you can do it by your self ....if the HDD is under warranty from factory you may take it to the store that you buy or nearest Western Digital distributor to claim the warranty...but if it doesn't in warranty..that's mean a problem why?because if HDD start beeping like you have, the possibility to make it work again is almost impossible that mean you maybe lost the data that you save in this HDD..

The hardware that you are trying to access is damaged or failing.

The device drivers for the hardware are faulty or incompatible.

There is a connection problem such as a bad cable

for internal hard drives

Test all power and data leads that attach to your hard drive IDE,SATA

the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO THE HARD DRIVE make sure they have a

secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty if its a flat 40pin ide

this will be the first to fail

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty

You have to format a hard drive with a third party disk unless its a usb data drive Restart your computer During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS then using the arrow keys navigate to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd press escape then press f10 to save to cmos restart note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to failsafe or optimised defaults after windows has loaded your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd hope this helps
