It depends on how humid it is in the conditioned space, how well sealed the conditioned room is, and how high you have the humidifier set. If you have low humidity in your conditioned space and you are asking for a higher humidity number, it could go through quite a bit of water. If your room is not sealed well, it will allow lower conditioned air into the room and put a larger demand on the humidifier

clean filter, filter is blocked not letting the air flow through correctly, take the filter out and clean it with warm water and leave to dry before refitting, can use soak but not to much as can damage the filter threads. but warm water will do the job to remove the particles its picked up.

More units... less WATER spritzing around = HAPPY FREIDA (I think). I sincerely believe... the "chalky" you speak of is merely a product of the CALCIUM level in your water... and a mist type of humidifier. Nothing wrong with your humidifier (follow owner manual cleaning instructions) BUT what you see is normal Sharper Image EV HD15 Instruction Manual Page 3 THE VISIBLE "mist" Your humidifier puts out are solid water drops... It WILL mark whatever it lands on... I think there ARE things you could try... Obviously turning down the humidifier to merely moist... rather than SPRITZING water on everything (solid/visible).
