Please confirm which of two is at fault. you can connect a DVD using the same RCA jacks, the red and whilte for audio and the yellow for the video. This is similar to the red light problem but the reason you get a screen is because the GPU has overheated.

You just need to stop the heat build up getting to the main chips and you will be able to play your games again.

To do this you have 2 choices:

Send it in and they will fix it for you although something to bear in mind that it will take 4 weeks and cost you $150 for the fix.

Or you can use a good PS3 Repair guide and fix it yourself.

My PS is going through the same problem. I called Sony and they were no help. First they'll make you go through steps that are unnecessary. but some crucial ones are these: 1. while PS3 is off with no disk hold power button until you here 2-3 beeps right after another. PS3 should not start. 2. Hold button again until you hear 1 beep and then 1 Double Beep. 3. You will need to plug in your controller via cable. 4. Now say you want to Restore File System. Select Yes. 5. Go through process of how you want it. 6. The next message that pops up says "The Hard Disk's File System is Corrupted an will be restored." 7. Sometime while you were online/gaming you got corrupted data and this is the result. 8. Say ok and let it fix itself. 9. It should be over soon. 10. If its fixed congratulations! if not continue with the list. 11. I tried this with Sony/Playstation and they said theres nothing i can do and to send it in. Heres the information to call them and everything:
Call: 800-345-7669 Just Press 0 on phone to reach a live person.
Tell them you want to send your PS3 for repairs and it cost's $99.00 us. S/H will be paid in the 99 dollars spent. Meanwhile you will have 3-5 Business days to be prepared they will send you a box for you PS3 its cables and Controller.

Ok, here is your answer:

Yes, plug in both HDMI and AV cables.

Press and hold the power button until the systems shuts off. (wait 2 seconds)

Press and hold the power button again until you here 3 beeps. Let go.

You should see, in either HDMI or AV, a screen that ask you to 'connect controller and press ps button.'

If you see this menu with AV and not HDMI, then you will have to use AV.

If you do not see this in either TV input, then this is what you have:

It is when your system powers on and acts normally but no display. Your GPU (graphics chip) has cracked or become damaged and will need to be sent in to SONY. You can try a 3rd party technician, but this repair has a very very low success rate.

If the system turns on but then turns itself off, beeps at you and flashes its lights at you then you have over heated the system. The GPU chip has problem pulled itself away from the board. This will require you to disassemble.......

Hi this is a very common problem and its to do with the ps3 over heating,
try the following.
leave it off and unplugged for an hour
check all air vents are free from fluff and dust and vac if needed.
make sure the ps3 is not being used whilst its on carpet
make sure the ps3 is not sitting on top of another electrical item such as dvd or sky box as this will cause it to over heat a lot quicker.
make sure its not wedged in a confined space it needs to have plenty of room around it to ensure cool air flow.

unplug all the leads from the back of the ps3 and the telly then plug them all back in, doing this removes any static that may have built up, then switch it on.

if after doing the above it still dont work then this indicates that either the gpu or cpu chip has over heated, if you have any warranty left take it back you need to check on the ps3 web site to see how old your ps3 is as this fault is covered by ps3 warranty for a couple of years but you need to check this.

now as for getting it repaired, well its a bit hit and miss i repair them myself and if it was an xbox 360 then i would say the chance of it working again is pretty high but as its a ps3 then these can be a bit hit and miss if the ps3 has over heated a lot and fried the cpu or gpu chip or both then the cost of repair would not be worth doing as it would be cheaper to buy a second hand ps3 or even a reconditioned one.

its not the kind of repair you can do yourself as you need to know how to test the circuit board to find out if the chips have been damaged.
the only other option you have is selling it for spares, i buy the damaged ones for spare parts but you wont get much for it as it is, i mean you could pay for the repair and you may get charged even though it cant be fixed,

i always say to my customers that if i cant repair it i will only charge for the parts i used which is nothing but if i do fix it then i charge them the cost of the repair, usually if its beyond repair they let me buy it off them as i pay more than they would get from ebay as they sell on their for about 30 quid with the problem you have got.

Following on from the PS3 3.50 firmware update today, we have started to hear of owners having problems logging on to their accounts.

We have heard of PS3 owners who have updated their system complaining that they cannot sign in, and every time they enter their password are getting the wrong password message. We have had customers who have two PSN accounts and cannot log into either of them. They are met with wrong password message, and even when they use "Forgot your Password" all that comes up is an error.

Conrad Zimmerman of Destructtoid is reporting that PSN is going to have some scheduled maintenance today. This could be why users are complaining of problems logging on to their accounts.

The maintenance is expected to take place during 8 am until 5pm Pacific time. There will be a lot of users who are at work during this time so it will not be a problem for them, but for everyone else it will be somewhat of an annoyance.
