I bought a new desktop computer and I can't seem to get Windows 10 to recognize the burner. I don't know what will be needed, in order, to get the burner working with Windows 10.

It's probably just a case of finding the right drivers for it. Search for your burner make and model number with the word "drivers" and see if any come up for Windows 10.

Can I transfer cassette tapes to this unit?

Not in the same format as on the tape. They would have to be converted to digital music files such as MP3 first. That would require audio capture software on the PC. Then, once you have the music converted, you can burn it to the CD/DVD.

My computer does not recognize hardware. FYI:

These are the steps to resolve the issue for the cd/dvd icon missing in the My computer.

Step 1: Please perform manual registry set up by following the below steps:

Please make a full backup of your registry files, particularly user.dat, system.dat, and policy.pol. If you make any incorrect entries, the backed-up registry files can be used to replace the corrupted registry entries.

Follow these steps to backup registry:

1. Click Start, select Run. In the "Open" field type REGEDIT
2. Click OK and click "File" in the menu bar
3. Click "Export" from the drop down menu this will open a new box
4. Click the down arrow beside "Save In" and select "Local Disk (C:)"
5. In the File Name field type BACKUP.REG Verify that under the "Export Range", that the radio button is beside "All"
6. Click Save.

Now make the following changes in registry:

1. Click Start and click Run(XP) or type Click Start and type regedit in search then hit enter(vista, Windows 7).
2. In the Open box, type regedit and click OK.
3. Click the plus (+) sign beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
4. Click the plus (+) sign beside System.
5. Click the plus (+) sign beside Current Control Set.
6. Click the plus (+) sign beside Control.
7. Click the plus (+) sign beside Class.
8. Locate the {4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} key and click it.
9. On the File menu, click Export.
10. In the File name box, type savedkey and click Save. It is better
to save the "savedkey" to the desktop.
11. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters (found in right
window pane) and then click Delete on the Edit menu.
12. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

NOTE: If this data type is missing, continue to the next
method.

13. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters (found in right
window pane) and click Delete on the Edit menu.
14. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
15. Quit the Registry Editor.

Step 2: Please uninstall the CD/DVD drive form Device Manager :

1. Click Start and select Control Panel.

2. Double-click the system icon. If the System icon is not found directly under Control Panel, click the Performance and Maintenance icon and then click the System icon.
3. The System properties Window opens. You can open the System Properties window directly by pressing the Windows key and Pause/Break key simultaneously.
4. Click the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button.
5. Click the plus (+) sign next to the DVD/CD-ROM drives .
6. Right-click the driver listed under this Category and select Uninstall. In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK.
7. Repeat step 6 until all entries under the device category are deleted.
8. Restart the computer.

After the notebook is restarted it automatically detects the drive and the drivers are installed.

Regards,

Shami

Without admin rights I am allowed to burn or lightscribe.

You should be able to unless he has specifically set rules against this. I am the IT guy for my company and they can burn DVDs and lightscribe.
Slap your IT guy around is the fix for this one.

HP DVD 1040 external lightscribe

  1. Clean Drive: commercial cd/dvd cleaner + air compressed can with narrow pipe inserted into device to reach lens.
  2. Update you sw from http://www.lightscribe.com/ (Control panel, diagnostic tool, application)
  3. be sure service is started: as Administrator go to Control panel/Administrative tools/Services
double-click on Lightscribe Service, and if it says disabled change it to automatic, then "start service" in the left pane if is already started and set to automatic stop and restart it you don't have to reboot to see results.
It worked for me on HP6710b with internal drive and with liteon external burner
