Programming Notes
• If your device does not respond to the remote after trying all codes listed or your brand is not listed in the code list, use the Auto Code Search method to program your remote.
• Sometimes the first code that "works" with your device may operate only a few functions of your device. There may be another code in the code list that performs more functions. Try other codes from the code list for more functionality.
This is a trial and error procedure; and quiet time consuming. You might have to check different codes said for your device.
Search the site by type in the "brand name" to your device; in the "Search box at the top right of the display window" to get gathered related posts.

Back - light problem. Check and replace damaged component/s at its back-light inverter board, or replace this board as card basis. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. It will be best to replace the inverter board as card basis.
http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
To some model sets; especially LED back-lighted types; the back-light inverter circuit will be part of the main power supply board [SMPS]. In such cases, the power supply board might need replacement. To some models sets, the back-light inverter and SMPS section circuit will be integrated at its main board itself. If so; the main board should be replaced. To some models of sets, all these section circuit will be integrated at its main board. If this is the case, you have to replace the main board.

Direct Code Entry
  1. Press and hold the SETUP button until the red indicator stays on, then release the SETUP button.
  2. Press and release the desired Mode button (TV, VCR, etc.). The red indicator blinks, then stays lit.
  3. Enter the 4 digit code from the code tables. Note: after a valid code entry, the red indicator turns off. For an invalid code, the red indicator flashes.
  4. With your device on, press CHANNEL UP. If the device responds, no further programming is required. Note: If some buttons do not operate your device, try one of the other codes for your brand.
  5. Code Search
If after trying "Direct Code Entry" your device does not respond, or if your brand is not listed, try doing a search of the code library for your code by following these steps.
    1. Manually turn on the device (TV, VCR, etc.) to be controlled.
    2. Press and hold the SETUP button until the red indicator stays on, then release the SETUP button.
    3. Press and release the desired Mode button (TV, VCR, etc.). The red indicator blinks once, then stays on.
    4. Press the CHANNEL UP button repeatedly (up to 300 times) until the device to be controlled changes channel. The red indicator blinks, then stays lit.
    5. Press and release MUTE to install the code. The indicator light goes off.
Most users will want to store VCR codes under the VCR button, Cable codes under CBL, etc. If you want to store a VCR code under CBL, etc., first follow the procedure for Direct Code Entry and press CBL in step 2 of Direct Code Entry, then enter ANY VCR code in step 3 of Direct Code Entry. Then follow the steps above for Code Search.

There really should be something on it identifying the make and model - check the underneath.
Assuming you;ve tried various discs to eliminate chance its just a dodgy disc, it will be the lens either dirty or misaligned, I think. If you bought it new it shouldn't be dirty. If you bought it from a store either new or used you should just take it back.
You can get lens cleaners from places like WIlkinsons and Debenhams for under $10 but I cant recommend them too strongly - bit hit and miss in my experience.
If cleaning doesn't work it will likely be a repair job or bin it - it wont be anything to do with settings or that you're doing anything wrong (unless putting the disc in upside down or something!), so unless a lens cleaner works, you're only option would be to have it repaired. If you knew make and model you might find diy repair instructions on internet but I'd suggest unless you're quite handy it's not easy. I have had a number of cheap dvd players over the years and it does seem to be an area where you get what you pay for - they've generally been unreliable and in some cases had an extremely short life.

Could it be the wrong type of disc or a disc that has been produced on a computer and not finalised or maybe a dirty laser/faulty disc motor?

Do an internet search on the make & model TV for a manual.

Hi,

Before ordering a replacement remote make sure you have followed the troubleshooting steps provided in the manual, mainly:

  1. Make sure the batteries are new and inserted and oriented properly.
  2. Check whether any button is stuck.
  3. Remove any obstacle between TV and remote.
  4. Bring the remote closer to the TV.
  5. Turn the TV off then on from the power button on the front of the LCD.

If you have tried these but still the remote does not work, there is a good chance it can be repaired. It can be as simple as a bad solder joint particularly where the batteries are inserted and/or a faulty IR LED. The LED is what emits the signals and is located in the center, front of the remote.

To check the IR LED, view the remote through a digital camera's LCD (you can use a mobile camera-phone) while pressing a button on the remote. The IR signals emitted cannot be perceived by the human eye but the camera will see it glowing. If it doesn't then its probably faulty.

After making sure the remote is the culprit, call on 1-888-257-8899 and ask them for a replacement remote.
