Uniden DECT 6.0 Cordless Phone Questions & Answers
Why does screen indicate "searching"?
The handset cannot communicate with its base.
When the handset cannot establish its secure (encrypted) radio
link with the base it is 'paired with' or 'registered' to, it will first
say "Connecting....", then it will display "Out of Range or No
Power at Base", then it settles at the infamous "Searching..."
display.
Although rare, the registration between base and handset can
become corrupted and lost so that we must de-register and
then re-register the pair.
First, ensure that power is 'on' at the base (a more common cause)
and the cradle will charge the handset, etc.
Second, be sure the handset battery is well charged as a weak battery will interfere with the registration process.
Then try the following ( 'works for the D1680, D1481, and similar):
To deregister the handset:
1. Press and hold the [END] and [ # ] keys at the same time,
after a few seconds the display will say
"System Reset, Deregister Handset"
press [SELECT]
scroll to "Base Unavailable"
press [SELECT] (chirps) press [END]
display reads "Place in base..."
Next, to re-register the handset:
2. Set the handset into the base cradle and wait,
after ~30 seconds the handset should display
"Handset #" and be good to go...
or it will display "Registration Failed"
Good luck!

Having problem connecting: handset out of range
This sounds like the handset has lost its "registration" with
the base. De-registering & re-registering is often easy.
First, be sure the handset battery is well charged as a
weak battery will interfere with the registration process.
Then try this ( 'works for the D1680, D1481, & similar):
To deregister the handset:
1. Press and hold the [END] and [ # ] keys at the same time,
after a few seconds the display will say
"System Reset, Deregister Handset"
press [SELECT]
scroll to "Base Unavailable"
press [SELECT] (chirps) press [END]
display reads "Place in base..."
Next, to re-register the handset:
2. Set the handset into the base cradle and wait,
within ~30 seconds the handset should display
a "Handset #" and be good to go...
Good luck!

How do I change the message on my answering machine?
Which Uniden phone do you have? for some models, you access the Answering System menu from the base; on others, you need to be holding the handset. The generic steps are below.
On the appropriate part of the unit, make sure that the phone system is in standby (no active calls on any handset). Then press Menu. Use the arrow keys to find the line for Answering System. Press OK. Navigate to a line about Greeting and press OK. You should see (and select a line) for Recording message. You'll be prompted to ensure that you want to record a new message. If you are using the handset, hold the unit about 6" away from your head. After confirming that you wish to record a new message, speak your new message clearly. When you are done, press End. The unit will cut off the recording if your message was too long. Make sure to save the message. Then go back up in the Menu system and look for a line for "Play back Greeting". If the message isn't clear, start over.
I hope this helps. Please add a comment with the model number of the phone for specifics for your manual. Some DECT phone manuals are available here: http://www.uniden.com.au/australia/cs_operating_manuals_phones.asp .

How to charge new battery
One you have replaced the batteries, place the unit in its charging stand and it will inform you approx. how long until the charge is complete. If not, there will be a charging status bar at the top right hand corner. I would typically leave it on the stand for 12 hours minimum. Also, do not put it back on the stand until it tells you that charging is required. Putting a device on charge before required develops a "battery memory", meaning the battery may be half full, but read as empty requiring a full charge.
A constant hum when using the phone.
try a new phone cable from the box to the wall. then move the adapter to another outlet. It might also be a ground issue with the phone wiring in the house.
Battery failing
did it charge properly? if not
most common problem would be that the battery has been used and abused going from 100 to low on a regular basis and just worn out. also if you are too far away from the base staion you wont have a good signal might cause the phone to search for it more often using more battery.
How do i turn off the silent mode
For many Uniden phones, the silent mode is toggled on and off by pressing and holding the # key (below 9 on any handset) when the phone is in standby mode. You may need to hold the key for as long as 5 seconds and a confirmation/length of silent mode prompt will be displayed when you enable Silent Mode. (If you do not respond to the prompt, the silent mode lasts until you toggle it off.)
Some models have a Do Not Disturb option. This is toggled on and off with the DND key on the base.
I hope this helps.
