the loss of steam is from usually from a barrier or o-ring or some sort of insulating material it has to be sealed because if it is not the the steam will not build up the pressure required for adequate cleaning power, try to seal up where the water is coming from, and yes you should be able to use something to get rid of the build up just make sure you rinse it all out so it wont mess anythng up and tap water is fine you will just get that build up from it cause of the chlorine and other products in tap hope this was helpful:)

How to use a steamer.
- Plug in the steamer.
- The steamer usually comes with a smallish padded square with a strap that slips over your hand. (If you so not have one of these, cut out a square from some stiff cardboard, pad it using cotton batting, and cover it with a heavy, smooth, waterproof or water-resistant material.)
- Make sure it is steaming nicely before you use it. You check by pulling the little trigger on the handle, and seeing how much steam issues when you release it. You actually want to use this while steaming as well, in order to release more steam when needed.
- Hang the garment, and slip the padded square over one hand.
- Place the hand with the square on the underside of the garment, and use it to keep the fabric smooth while you steam it.
- Use the steamer by holding the nozzle close to the garment, and pulling both it and the padded square in downwards strokes.

Does it require salt?
NO. Salt will cause deposits in the system. Only use the chemicals that the manufacturer recommends.

On and off petal switch not working
When I took mine apart I noticed the switch had melted near the contacts. This makes me not want to fix it, but instead, look for a better model. Hope this helps.
