Have you tried a cold re-boot on printer PC and router worth a try first then check all are on-line and communicating Can you use the PC without the Ethernet cable or a direct cable to the printer just to set it up (Re-set up).

Ps. my old HP is a pig at time but I never have to use the cable which is a good job as I can never find the thing...

I would be happy to assist you with your Photosmart 5520 printer. I understand you are seeing an improper shut down message and the carriage will not move. Although you may not be seeing a carriage jam message, you might find the following document helpful:

If the issue persists, I suggest calling us. What you can do, is use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:

Step 1. Open link: h22207 www2 hp com
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on: HP contact options - click on Get phone number

Case number and phone number appear.

for last chance, if u are ussing refurbished ink cartridges,use originals.but not for sure it`ll worked!

what you do with any inkjet is take all the carts out
so you eject the carts position then remove the mains

so its stays in park

slide a bit of sugar paper {blotting paper} under the cart head

then put a large bit of cotton wool into the colours cart housing
and soak it through with 30-50mL of IPA from the local chemist
and then fold it all shut and place a damp towel over the printer
too let it all soak in

then once you remove the cotton and put new carts it will work

most printers have a soak away for old ink if you have an inkjet you have well used and well then replace it with a modern 70 quid all singing all dancing model

so repair with IPA or replace with new

i prefer colour toner ...laser prints

Press Cntr Alt Del and see what is hamming your PC or using the highest Of Cpu, as a last resalt, fully restart your mashine,, that should fix your problem.

Easy, you open the cover, remove the old one, remember which way it was inserted if you are not very technical, and insert a new one same way. Just make sure you hear a click, when it fully inserted.

If you have and running a full software suit for that printer on your PC, than just go thrue that, and follow the instructions. It real easy..

generally speaking this is a cartridge problem - some nozzles are clogged - U need to find tools in the printer menu then find clean printhead and run the process and print the test page or print quality page. and keep doing it 2 or 3 times untill the quality is OK - If still no good after all of this U can try soaking the printhead in 1/4" of warm water for 15 minutes and try again - if you are using original HP cartridges you are pretty much done at this point - if you are using refilled or aftermarket cartridges try replacing the black cartridge (I am assuming this is giving you the problem described) with a new HP (buy the small one just in case it still doesnt work) oif you have a cartridge refill place nearby U cant check and see if they can physically clean the printhead for you but results are not always good

I will suggest to delete all the drivers and any info from your printer out of the computer, after you that unplug your printer from the computer , remove the power cords from the printer then go to HP support page make sure is the official page if you see a page with AD yellow color next to it is not the official. Look for the must currently drivers for your printer and download them then install them. when you confirm that you have them correctly installed turn off your computer and reconnect everything back from your printer and follow the instruction; let me know how goes please.

Generally speaking when I see this message I just hit OK and it goes ahead and prints and everything shows up without being cut off - I am in the ink business and my test page shows this message all the time but its not an issue if you press OK and part of ther page is cut off you eitherr need to expand your margins or make the content fit the page

Go to HP.com. At the topof the page select "SUPPORT", then "DOWNLOAD DRIVERS". In the FIND MY PRODUCT block, enter "5520" and click the "GO" button. Scroll down the list until you see your device, click on it. Then select your OS from the drop-down window and download the driver.
