My unit blows out black soot looking stuff, and it smears when touched, and my filter is clean. What is it? And how can I get it to stop?

Carol, the first thing I would suspect would be mold in the insulation within the blower compartment. Sometimes the cooling coil overflows, causing the fibreglas insulation to get wet which in turn allows mildew/mold to form in that compartment. Severe cases will sometimes discharge nasty stuff as you describe coming out of the ducts. Turn off the power and remove the blower compartment cover and investigate.

My frigidaire air conditioner is making my apartment feel damp and when i took my filter out to clean it that part was damp too! What do I do to fix this?

You may have a clogged drain or the unit is installed without enough angle pitch for the water to drain to the back of the unit toward the outdoor section of the unit. I'm assuming it's a window air conditioner? The moisture condenses on the cooling coil near the filter and should drip down into a condensate drain pan, then the water should drain to the back of the unit into a pan at the condenser coil fan that is rejecting the heat outside. The fan blade usually has a ring on the outdoor fan that pick up the condensate moisture the fling accumulated water onto the hot condenser coil to evaporate it. Also the filter should not be touching the cooling coil. Make sure it in the correct slot. Some a/c cooling coil require a wetting agent that allow the water to slide down the coil and not pull off of the coil into the indoor circulating fan.

Frigidaire AC model LRA187MT2. Compressor runs nonstop - does not matter what the temperature setting is. When put into fan mode displays H1 instead of the temperature. Filter is clean.

You probably have a circuit board failure. On the board there are micro-relays that control power to the compressor. And in that relay the switch that is normally open is stuck closed.

Why my air conditioner it's dropping water?

Condensation is normal but window air conditioners bases must be tilted to the outside of the window so the condensation drains outside. The drain hole in the pan can plug with dirt overfilling the pan allowing the water to leak inside your home.

I bought a new thermostat that requires a C wire. I have a spare wire in the cable that goes from my thermostat to my air handler. It's a Model B3BM-O36K-B Frigidaire model air handler.

At your AHU there may be a terminal block that has a C terminal. If not, you will need to locate C. Your outdoor units control wire should have 1 that connects to the Y signal allowing 24v to pass from Y at the t-stat to a wirenut at the air handler, from that wirenut to the contactor. And C comes from the contactor to a wirenut at the airhandler and to C side of transformer. Common wire colors from o.d.unit are red=24v and White from the o.d. unit, (NOT THE WHITE FROM T-STAT!) is the common. The transformer may also have a tag/sticker that states 24v and common with a color of wire for C. And if the t-stat takes batteries that you need to install, you shouldn't need C wired in. C is there so you don't need batteries, if it has a battery option.

Frigidaire AC window unit, model fam185r2a (18,500 BTU) only cools for a few minutes before it cycles off and just fan blows. Then a few min later cool air cycles back on. Is this a thermostat issue?

The window units normally have a sensor thats attached to the front of the indoor coil. This controls the thermostat. I usually pull this sensor away from the coil because it stops cooling before the room is cool. It is attached to the cold coil so it senses the coil temp, not the room temp. You can normally see it when you remove the air filter. Don't break it! It may be a wire or small copper tube

My fan speeds on my frigidaire window unit keep changing by itself. Input and advice please!!!

Hello Jordan, thank you for your inquiry!

From my understanding the fan speeds on your Frigidaire air conditioner changes on its own. Do you own a remote with your air conditioner? It could be getting accidentally pressed and that is causing your fan to switch. If you do not have a remote with your air conditioner it could be a potential issue within your control panel or keypad. I would then recommend performing a reset on your air conditioner and you can do that by unplugging the power cord and pressing the reset button. Once the reset button has been pressed you would need to hit the test button and then you should be able to plug it back in. If this does not resolve your issue I would recommend seeking assistance from a professional technician for proper diagnosis and repair. This will help you avoid any unnecessary part purchases. -Matt

Frigidaire window unit fra18emu2 compressor will not turn off when power is shut off. Must unplug. Why?

Either the compressor relay has become stuck (most likely) or there is a wiring fault internally where power is being shunted directly to the compressor (also possible). Check the condition of the wiring around the compressor start capacitor and, if you see melted wires, there's your culprit. (NOTE: Melted wires all need to be replaced to eliminate possible fire hazard.)
