Based on the history of this printer series, likley this unit is a boat anchor. The reliability was so poor that HP started replacing these under warranty when they failed with a different unit because they could not guarantee that spare parts would last.

Scanner 5 error is a terminal failure of the formatter board, which often destroys the scanner drive motor as well. Based on the price of replacement machines, I would not waste my time with this if I were you. Near the end of the life of the 2727 HP was offering a replacement unit in a different model because they were not confident about the replacement formatters they were selling or providing for warranty.

Error code 5 is a failed scanner. This failure is covered by an extended service advisory, which means they will replace the scanner at no charge to you as long as your printer was manufactured before January 1, 2010. You can look on the back of the printer at the serial number plate for the date of manufacture. Contact HP at 1-800 HPINVENT

You have to be a little bit more specific next time, we have 2 possible scenarios:
A) The printer freezes at the HP LOGO
B) Blank display / No display
Both are usualy caused by a problem in the formatter (Mainboard) . There is nothing you can do to recover it. If the printer is still under warranty you will need to call HP (1 800 334 51 44) or take the printer to an athorized warranty depot in your area. This link will help.

First, power the printer off, wait for about 30secs and power on. If problem persist replace the scanner.

Solution found: Change the scan default format to Tiff, but then save the document as PDF on the workstation. We think this is a newly discovered but unintended feature of the newest hp scanner software package.
