yes you use the adupter cable to connect direct to laptop computer

Check that you removed the protective tape. some cartridges have two of these pieces of tape one over the head and possibly on on the contacts to the printer.

If you recently re-filled or had the cartridge refilled or even bought one of the many cheaper replacement cartridges you should read on

Most modern cartridges have an ink level chip built on to them.
Should the level drop below 25% then most of these chips lock up and will not reset.

Re-filling them will have no effect

If you are lucky you should be able to find either a chip resetter around on the INTERNET or maybe even local

OR

Even better empty cartridges that never need to be reset.
The second option is my preference

I realise these are not for your specific printer but there are others listed on both those sites as well.

cheaper cartridge problems have been on the rise recently and that is for ALL makes of printer.
If you try to clean the contacts be VERY careful cleaning contacts and ONLY use isopropynol on a lint free bud or cloth.
Also be very gentle.

I have seen the contacts cleaned and cartridges ruined with other methods of cleaning.
Rubbing too hard can also cause a badly set chip to move making it inoprable.

I dont like full prices replacements either which is why I always provide the links
I usually reccomend that people take back any cartridge that does not work right from the get-go.

I dont know of anyone who has had a problem doing that be it a shop refill or otherwise.

No matter if I paid $1 or $100 for a cartrdige I would still expect it to work

Run the Wireless configuration utility of your printer
(XP)
>go to start
>all programs
> go to your lexmark folder
>and look for wireless configuration utility (it could be under tools folder)
> Install it and follow the prompt on your screen

(Vista)
> type wireless on your start search bar to show the wireless configuration utility tool
and follow the prompt

Your printer takes Lexmark #23 black cartridge and #24 color. They list on Lexmark for about $22 US for the black and $24 for the color.

Dunno if you can. The Lex is lookin for a chip in that cartridge and isn't seeing one.

I am sure there is a trick to disable this check - will look on web and update later

Post the error message, and try to reinstall the USB driver.

Both pad styles should work just the same in your printer. You need to take the cartridge back to the store and have them replace it. From time to time in the manufacturing process 1 or more contacts will mis-connect and you get the error you are talking about.

There are a small number of #23/#24 cartridges that are not properly recognized by the printer. Lexmark has a firmware upgrade to correct this issue. The upgrade for the X3430 is available from Lexmark at:

To install the firmware upgrade,

1. Make sure the printer is ON and connected with a USB cable.
2. Download and run the appropriate firmware upgrade for your computer.
3. Be sure not to disconnect or power off the printer until the upgrade is complete

When the update finishes the printer will restart and will accept the cartridges. Please contact Lexmark support if this does not fix the problem.

you may have to go thru the menus but you can find installlation software and support for your printer. I found the software for our lexmark here at work at this site ... they sent us a primter without any CD in the box , i didn't want to wait for themn to ship a new one. It was very painless.

I gave gotten it to retrieve the applications list by opening Lexmark Imaging Studio while it was searching, I AM however still unable to scan it connects to my comp I tell it to save as a file and it goes "Requesting Scan" then "Scan Request Failed"

I have the same problem. I used the "Lexmark Imaging Studio" application and clicked on the "Display or Change Network settings" link at the left bottom corner (The words might be different, my installation is in German, so I translate it as I assume it would be in English). I then added my Computer again with a new name to the printer and it worked. Now I actually want to find out how to delete the old entry on the printer, but that is later's problem.

My guess now is that mybe it is because I have a router and use DHCP ip addresses. I am going to give my computer a fixed IP and see if it then always works. Maybe the printer is not able to really resolve the IP address and saves it. Only guessing!

Call tech support for your new broadband provider. They will be glad to assist you in setting up your system to work with their service. They have settings & tech info on just about all hardware to make it work with their service. Hope this helps.
