Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer While booting watch for, and.. "Press any key to boot from cd" the first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting your system and loading files. "Inspecting your system and loading files". When you get to the Welcome to setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement Select the option to repair. "If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it" Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation, press R to begin the Repair process. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes. Shortly after the Copying Files the pc will restart itself. During the reboot, do not boot from the CD again, setup will resume automatically. when you see the Installing Devices progress bar(Lower left), press SHIFT + F10. A command console will now open up At the prompttype NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. You now have access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel. Pick the account you need to change and change your password. After you've made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the repair, you will need the product key. Once that is done you should be able to log in normally with your new password.
This is taking advantage of a security flaw in windows, your other option is to reinstall windows overtop of your current installation, or to format and do a clean install.

Even with the automated (windows-based) BIOS updating software, this is not a small matter. I would make certain that you need the update for a specific problem before proceeding. Also realize that a failed or interrupted BIOS update may ruin the BIOS chip resulting in a much more costly and difficult repair. Don't jump into any BIOS update without doing your homework, making sure it's necessary, and make sure you get the correct BIOS for your PC. And make sure you don't interrupt the power once it starts! That will brick your computer for sure!

The motherboard is dead. if its new within 12 moths ring up acer and book it in for repair if its outside of warranty then you will need to buy a replacement from an online auction place or a computer repair shop.

You have to unlock the hard drive from within BIOS if you don't want to see that screen again. However, if you don't know that password then the laptop is not going to usable by you. Normally this prevents access to a computer in case someone steals it, since the thief won't know the hdd password and can't unlock it to access any data.

I would download and run the registry utility from iobit.com
It is freeware and works then run CHKDSK/F. If that doesn't work there is a memory utility within iobit.com that works very well.

Welcome to Fixya! Since you said that there is an error on the registry,there are two ways of fixing this one,by accessing your registry or running the autofix from Microsoft.This is gonna be a bit complicated since were going to access your registry, but just follow all the steps and it will be much easier.
1. Click on START
2. Type REGEDIT on the search bar on START Menu on the Run Box
3. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
4. Expand SYSTEM
5. Expand CurrentControlSet
6. Expand Control
7. Expand Class
8. Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
9. Look for the Upper Filters / right click on it / click on Delete
10. Look for the Lower Filters / right click on it / click on Delete
11. Restart PC
12. Try you CD / DVD ROM
If nothing happens, click on this link then click on RUN and follow the steps, then restart computer and try to run a disc again, if still nothing happens, theres a possibility that the problem is with the hardware side or the media player that you are you using...

I have an Acer 3680 series laptop and it originally came with Windows Vista Basic (now I have Windows 7 32 bit on it).

But, anyway, on Windows XP, Vista, and 7 the restore is done by going to the help menus and typing in 'restore' or 'recover' whichever route you want to go.

Data is stored on the computer's hard drive that can take the computer all the way back to the day it was new, or to a freshly installed state of the operating system.
