Hi its HP Compaq 6720s originally vista basic and

First, right-click on the desktop where there are no icons and choose Display settings, may be in advanced settings, but look for supported screen resolutions. If you pick one that is not supported, doing nothing when the screen goes wonky will automatically cause it to revert to what it was before you changed it. One of the settings there should work for your screen. If none work, go to your device manager and update the drivers for the display.

I have a Compaq 6720s Laptop, and I have plugged in not charging, and when unplugged despite saying 89% charged, turns off after one minute and thirty seconds

I suggest your battery has outlived it's usefulness. Perhaps you can get an even better one from an internet retail place. I've bought larger ones for various laptops and never had one fail prematurely.

RAM slot not working

Re-soldering a memory slot can be costly. It takes specialized equipment to solder this component and it has to be done right. If you tested the same stick in the two different slots and it fails to boot when the stick is in that one slot, then you have correctly identified a bad memory slot. To be cost efficient, it is propbably beter to change out the main board. There are however companies out there that will repair motherboards regardless of the problem, prices range widely for the standard repair plus parts plus shipping. E-Bay has several companies that advertise these types of repairs.

I have an hp compaq

Usually a rapid blinking charge light is alerting you of a battery fault. Try taking the battery out, plugging your computer in, and turning it on (with the battery out). If it boots up, then your battery is to blame, call customer service right away and see about getting a new battery.

Volume controls?

The quick specs from HP does not show a volume control. Most laptops are designed this way. All volume controls will be located on screen unless you have touch lights across the top of the keyboard, which in that case there would be 3 speaker icons (one is mute, and the others are volume Up/Down).

Compac perserio cq71 wont turn on

Computer does not boot up The problem maybe the RAM, it is faulty or just needs reseating to make proper electrical contact. Reseat the RAM and then boot up your laptop. If it still does not boot up then remove the RAM module/s and take them to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM for you. Just like you sometimes need a mechanic to repair your car, sometimes you do need a technician to diagnose and identify the fault or faults on your computer. Not only does a good service technican have the experience to deal with this type of problem, they also have the equipment that allows them to look at things the average computer user can't see, and he has a collection of replacement parts that can be used to quickly test individual components on your computer.
