https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfJEw-VlpWYHold the "VCR/DVD" button while pressing the "On/Standby" button, and the receiver should enter "Standby." Turn it on again by pressing the "On/Standby" button. Bear in mind that this will clear all the presets and other settings - but it may be those settings that are causing the problems.

1) DTS will only work through a digital connection (coaxial, optical, or HDMI) between your receiver and dvd player. DTS and Dolby 5.1 cannot carry a signal over red and white rca connections.
2) After number 1 is solved ensure the reciever is set to the digital channel, your DTS-HD in this case, or in an auto mode.
3) Finally the most important is that the signal is a DTS signal. Start a DTS capable dvd, go to the sound menu and set it for DTS.
If it can recognize some discs then that cd may be faulty, or if it is unable to see any discs then that unit has a problem.
You say its brand new, some machines have "transit screws" to remove but I did not see any mention in its instruction book.
So its possible the mechanism or laser unit is faulty or damaged in some way for that I would refer back to where you bought it or the service company for Onkyo, as you will be at risk if you tried to fix it yourself as you will lose out on warranty.

Hello Tony Ramsey, as you comment, you may have problems in the output of speakers or in the speaker connection cables or in the speakers themselves
I suggest you disconnect all the speakers, check the cables that are in good condition, without damage to the plastic or joints that could generate a short circuit
Go reconnecting cables and speakers one at a time, testing if the fault appears
There could be the possibility of internal component failure, in this case, look for a specialized technical service
I hope you can solve the problem

Here is the user manual https://www.intl.onkyo.com/downloads/manuals/pdf/ht-r393_manual_en.pdf
First thing to do is to disconnect everything from the received,, and take it to another AC outlet to plug it into, and try again.
The unit does not have an external fuse, and it is not recommended to open it.
Here is the service manual for qualified persons https://www.vintageshifi.com/repertoire-pdf/pdf/telecharge.php?pdf=Onkyo-HTR-393-Service-Manual.pdf
You have already pointed out the problem:
Problem is Det.Protect: I.
How to fix :
(1)download 545/535/525 service manual.
(2)check all power transistors CE & BE resistances
if theyy are very low ,0 ohm, or infinity.
(3)check all 0.22 ohm resistors if they are open
or turning greater.
(4)Check the biasing circuit with a small rating
transistor and an orange color variable resistor.
(5)Check all channels.
Hi Bob, for what you say, your remote control has problems in the ignition, try to disassemble it and clean the plate of the accounts, with a little liquid glass cleaner, you will observe, as a accumulation of rubber residue, on the contacts in the remote control platelet, clean and dry very well

On that model you cannot listen to channels A and B at the same time . If you do want to hook up both make sure you series wire them ....hook the positive "+" of speaker "A" to the amp "+", then connect the neg "-" of "A" to the "+" of speaker " B " and then the "-" of "B" to the "-" of the amp . This is because the amp only supports 6 to 16 ohm loads . Please search series vs parallel speaker wiring on Google and look at the image diagrams if you have any confusion about it
Hello
If you have the original remote
check the display button or dimmer button.
If you don't get any illumination from the display screen, that means that display florescent is at the end of life needs to be serviced.
Regards.
Hello
Your AVR is in protection mode
Check Speaker cables if there is a short circuit or defected speaker. can also do the same thing.
If non of the above.
you need to service the AVR .

Hello Brenda
Where do you want to hook your ONKYO and with what you want to connect it to.
There are several steps and a lot of devices can be connected to the Onkyo.
1 Speakers are to be connected on the rear side of the device. as it shows in and on the Instruction manual If you have it.
And for other devices each device has its way of connectors.
Optical to optical and RCA to RCA ...
IT depends on What kind of devices you have.
