There are a few common causes of this problem.

1. Bad cabling, try a new cable and see if it shows up.
2. Bad drivers on your PC, try the device on a different PC, if it shows up, report back and we'll diagnose the PC. If it doesn't move on to # 3
3. Failed USB circuitry within the enclosure, buy a new enclosure, move the drive into the new enclosure and try again.
4. Failed drive within the enclosure. In this case you will need to either send it to a pro or work through several Do It Yourself methods to attempt a recovery.

If you wish the help of a pro, reply back with your Country, State and City and I will refer you to an appropriate facility. If you wish to continue trying to recover the data yourself let me know and we can step through several ways of attempting a recovery.

Hey, congratulations on successfully installing the harddive.

Since its brand new, there is no volume in the disk (no partition and not formated)

To create a new volume and format the disk for the first time

on desktop, right click my computer icon, select manage from the menu, on the left side of the management window click on disk management

now on the right side, find your new harddrive, right click on it (its most likely the drive 1)

so right click on the 250gb hdd, create new volume, use NTFS default settings, and you may use quick format. normal format will take from 15 minutes to a hour or more.

with quick format the disk will be useable within seconds.

after this is complete you will see a new disk in my computer.

Run "chkdsk /f <drive letter> on the drive. If this is the primary drive you can do this with a windows repair disk which you can create on any windows vista/7/8 computerControl Panel > Backup Restore > Create repair disk

Try to boot from your OS cd or recovery disc. Run the disk check software and see if your hard disk is mechanically ok or it crashed. If your hard disk is mechanically functional then run virus check on your hard disk. This will clean all the virus infections. And you will be alright hopefully.
If your hard disk's boot sector is damaged you may want to format the hard disk and place the boot sector in another portion of hard drive.

Try connecting it to another computer.
If it does not work, then either the disk-drive has failed,
or the USB-cable is damaged,
or the USB-to-disk-drive interface inside the case has failed.

Is the SAMSUNG still under warranty? (1 year? 2 years? 3 years?)
If so, SAMSUNG will replace it, at minimal cost to you.

Hi. Sounds like a problem with the harddrive boot block. Try the torubleshooting steps i provided to you below. If same issue appears after thes troubleshooting then theres a need to replace your Harddrive.

* If you have a floppy try to boot with bootdisk http://www.bootdisk.com/
if you have a bootable windows CD - try booting that then go to the repair console.

A disk-drive can be "partitioned".

It's possible that your disk-drive has two partitions:
* a "primary" partition of 125G,
* an "extended" partition of the "other" 125G,
with a "logical" drive allocated within the extended partition.

Inside your laptop, you would have seen 'C:' as the "primary", and 'D:' as the "logical" partition, and 'E:' as your CD/DVD drive.


So, if UBUNTU is only looking at the "primary" partition, it will report 125GB.

Connect the drive as a "slave" to some desktop computer, and check for having multiple partitions, and do your backup from that system.

follow the directions in the setup menus.
