Maxtor drive flashing but not reading

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.

Kind Regards
Andrea

Everything seems to be fine, but

If you have tried it on several computers, then it seems there is something wrong with the HD or its cable. Are you able to use another USB cable with it to see if that fixes it? I'm assuming the power light is on, and you can hear the drive spinning?

I bought an external drive about 2 years back. It worked beautifully but close to a year after purchase stopped working. Being a technician, I removed the drive from the case and connected it inside my PC where it still works fine. The USB circuitry in the case had failed, not the drive, which was good for me.

Maxtor manager software shows no drives

Hi,

First and foremost if you're getting power but not seeing the drive you likely have either a drive or enclosure circuitry failure.

If you have no power lights try a new power adapter.

If the drive has failed and you want the data back you will need a Data Recovery Pro to asist you, if the enclosure has failed it will be much simpler.

Step one take the drive enclosure to a PC shop(no offence to Mac techs but they stink at salvage efforts, must be too many years of promising nothing ever fails ;)). When you get there ask them to remove the hard drive from your Maxtor enclosure and pop it into a generic enclosure(looks cheap but the internals are identical in most cases). Then ask them to test the drive to see if it shows up, depending on how you formatted it they may need MacDisk to make it visable.

If it works, buy the enclosure and head home, you're done. Plug it into your Mac and go on with your day, no harm no foul.

If this fails to see the drive, then the Hard Drive itself is likely at fault, in this case reply to me with your Country, State and City and I will refer you to the closest Data Recovery Facuility with Mac capabilities to have your data retrieved,

Of course if the only data on it is still accesible on the computer and it's a dead drive, just buy a new external, head home and rerun the backups manually as in this case it's cheaper to chuck and replace the external than have it recovered.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

The device Generic volume cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later

why not try to use a separate program to safely remove the drive.

Seagate Portable Hard drive 4TB, part number 2N1AP6-500

Hi, Please put your computer into safe mode before attempting to connect to the hard drive again. Safe mode turns some feature off when activated so whatever program is forcing the shutdown might have be paused when connecting to the external hard drive. Also, try connecting the hard drive to a non-laptop intermediary device and then connecting that device to your computer and attempting to access the hard drive folder within the intermediary drive. Thank you.

Need restore my RAW file system back to NTFS without losing any hard drive files?

There are two options for you to get your drive stuffs back right now: 1). Do not format this RAW file system external hard drive temporarily and plunge it to your PC. And then, choose and apply RAW external hard drive data recovery software to scan this drive and find your preferred drive files back as many as possible. 2). Directly consult some professional data recovery services from some data recovery companies or agencies. In the future, remember to save copies of everything important on at least two devices in case of any similar data loss issues.

I have seagate plugged in and attached to my computer. I downloaded the program but I get the message connect a dashboard enhanced drive to activate features ??

Can you please provide more detail on the program you are downloading, the model of drive, and model of computer? On the face of it, the program seems to be saying it is not compatible with the model of drive you have plugged in, or that the drive has been reformatted in a way that is not compatible. Does the drive show up in the File Explorer / Finder of the machine?after comment : ok, if you can drag and drop files onto it, then That means it is operational, and recognized by the system. The next question is why you can’t install the Seagate Desktop software. Where did you get the software from? Try going to Seagate Support and looking up your drive model, and doing a fresh download of the software they have for that model. Alternatively, there are other backup software packages available, Acronis, Aoemi, EaseUS, and others. You can find reliable downloads of utility software at downloads.com (CNET) or look for reviews from PcWorld or PCMagazine for their recommendations of the best paid and free backup software
