Cannot play dvd's from overseas

Your BluRay player is probably set/fixed to Region 2 (if you are in UK/EU). Most devices let you change the region bashing some strange combination of buttons on the remote control (engineer code/command), that allows it to be set to different regions or preferably REGION 0 (region free).

You can most likely find this by google'ing your BluRay player with the words region engineer code, but if you supply the make and model, don't mind having a look for you.

SHARP BD-HP16U Cannot Play

Try this....
You need to force the player to the the Top Menu of the disc.
The way to do this is: load disc, wait until it says "Reading Completed" (about 1 minute).

Wait for the PLAY icon ">" to show in the upper right corner (this may take up to 30-40 secs).

Once you see the ">" Hit the STOP button on the remote to get to the player's splash screen.

From the Sharp splash screen Hit the "Top Menu/Title List" button on the remote and wait for the circulating dots and then the disc menu appears.
Play the movie from the menu and you should be good to go.

CAN'T GET IT TO PLAY BLURAY MOVIES IT PLAYS DVD

Check your firmware version by turning on the blu ray player with no disc inside. Press the setup button on the remote control and choose settings. Choose version. You should have Version HU9071500. If you do not you will need to perform a firmware update. If you have the current version your drive might be bad and the unit would need to be repaired or replaced.

Are blu ray stops payling in the middle of movies for no apparent reason

One of the possible reasons is that your Blu-ray player is unable to read the disc. Check to make sure the inserted disc is clean and not scratched on the playing side. Samsung blue ray player loads dvd but goes to slideshow setting

We just figured this out. We had already tried to update the firmware through the blu-ray device itself directly from the website. For some reason, that was not successful. We had to download the latest firmware from the samsung site onto our computer and then burn it onto a CD. Then we used the CD to load into the blu-ray and updated it's firmware to handle some newer movies we had purchased. It now is able to play the problematic movies. The samsung site has instructions for doing this. Good luck.

Incompatible Disc Error with Sharp BD-HP20U Blu-ray Player

Blu-ray technology clearly won the battle for high definition DVD movie dominance. But Blu-ray technology continues to evolve, and as it does, new issues pop up. Once recent problem is the "incompatible disc" error that is becoming more common with the Sharp's very popular BD-HP20U Blu-ray player. When I purchased the Sharp BD-HP20U player in February of 2008, it was getting rave reviews as one of the best Blu-ray players under $500. Indeed, it has performed flawlessly, until just recently. Unlike older DVD technology that remained relatively static throughout its popular life, both Blu-ray video and sound technology continues to evolve. That is the main reason that Blu-ray players include a feature that allows users to easily update the firmware so that the player can keep up with the technology advances. Depending upon the features built into a Blu-ray player, the firmware can be updated via an Ethernet connection on a home network, using Wi-Fi, or by downloading the update onto a USB drive. The Sharp BD-HP20U uses the latter method. The first firmware update that was required to keep up with new advances was an update to fix problems with the movie Jumper. Without the update, as soon as the movie started to play, the screen would fragment and freeze up. Loading the update resolved the issue, but may have created other problems. I recently purchased the newest Rambo movie on Blu-ray. When I tried to play it the player looked like it was going through the normal boot and loading process, but would then display the "incompatible disc" error message and reject the disk. I tried to load the disk over and over and always got the same result. My first thought was that I bought a defective disc. The disc was pristine with no visible scratches or defects. I searched the web for issues related to bad Rambo Blu-ray discs and found literally hundreds of product reviews and forum postings, all of which were reporting the same error, but the errors were related to a wide range of Blu-ray disks that would not play on the Sharp BD-HP20U player. Most of the problems appear to have started after users did the Jumper firmware update. The problem is that once the update has been run, there isn't any way to load the old firmware version. The next step was the check the Sharp web site for another update, but the last firmware update was for the Jumper problem. I took the Rambo disk to my local Best Buy and tested it in several players, including their BD-HP20U demo box. Rambo played fine in all the players, so that isolated the problems to my BD-HP20U. I then contacted Sharp's Customer Support department via a form on their web site and gave them all the nitty gritty details. It took a week for them to respond and all I received was a BS message letting me know that Blu-ray technology was evolving and futher recommended that I call their Customer Support to report the disc problem. Huh? Didn't I just conatact Customer Support to report the problem with Rambo? The message was from a Customer Support rep advising me to call Customer Support, but the message did not include a telephone number. Doh! I temporarily put Rambo aside and assumed the problem would eventually be fixed with the next firmware update. Other Blu-ray discs played perfectly. Then I received Iron Man and when I tried to play it, the "incompatible disc" error greeted me once again. With my frustration level at a new high, I found a number for Sharp's Customer Support department and called them. The Solution that Worked for My Player I laid out the entire scenario for the Sharp rep on the phone and expressed my frustration with the nice piece of MIND. He asked several questions and we tried to load both the Rambo and Iron Man discs again with no luck. Then he explained the process for resetting the BD-HP20U back to the factory default settings. To reset the factory defaults, turn the player on and wait for it to boot. The rep instructed me to hold the power button down for 5 seconds until a Reset message appears on the screen. I never saw a Reset message and it took about 15 seconds, but the player rebooted. After that, both Rambo and Iron Man played perfectly! Woo-hoo! Because I had never changed any of the configurations on the player, I have to assume that the Jumper firmware update changed the settings. The Sharp rep said that the Reset procedure does not roll the firmware update back; it merely changes the configuration settings to the factory defaults. Nonetheless, it resolved the problems. For those who need to do firmware updates, you can find the updates on the Sharp BD-HP20U firmware update page. Make sure that you download the proper file for your player and follow the instructions in the manual. I thought I would pass this on to others because I have not seen this solution mentioned anywhere on the web and the Reset procedure is not in the Sharp BD-HP20U user's manual.

What does RC 1 mean

RC means REGION CODE - Depending on the numbering, it means that your DVD will only play in countries designated by the code.

Example

RC 1 means Region Code 1...... This disc will play in dvd players in Canada, United States, U.S Territories , Bermuda.

RC 2 = Western Europe, incl. United Kingdom, and Central Europe; Western Asia; including Iran, Israel and Turkey, Egypt; Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho; French overseas territories

RC 3 = Southeast Asia; South Korea; Taiwan; Hong Kong; Macau

RC 4 = Mexico, Central and South America; Caribbean; Australia; New Zealand; Oceania;

RC 5 = Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Continent of Africa, excluding Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho; Central and South Asia, Mongolia, North Korea.

RC 6 = People's Republic of China, Hong Kong

RC 7 = Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia)

RC 8 = International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.[1]
RC ALL means all 8 flags are set and can play on ANY player
0 or no region means no flag is set can be played anywhere or flags 1-6.

I hope this helps.

I succesfully updated my bluray bdhp20 put is not

Try resetting the blu-ray player. Turn on the unit and wait for the unit to boot up. Then press and hold the power button on the bdhp20u for at least 5 seconds until you see a reset message. (Some hold this power button for 15 seconds without seeing a reset message.) This will return the unit to the factory settings but doesn't change the firmware. For some this solves the problem with a disc. I hope it works for you. Cindy Wells
