Hello!

That device does not need special drivers to work with Vista.
Vista will recognized this device and installed appropriate drivers to make it work with it.

I would suggest that you run the Add New Wizard on the Control Panel. And instead of selecting the Install the drivers automatically, browse manually for the drivers and look in the c:\windows\system32 folder where the drivers are kept.

It will install fine.

Welcome to Fixya. If the device is freezing, recovery screen won't work and the computer will not recognize it. It's obvious that the player is bad. It is very common to a bad usb device that if the computer will not be able to detect it. If you can check the warranty of the device and contact Archos fro possible repair or replacement so that it would be free.

On the back there's a tiny sticker that says 'Archos' and has the model number. Remove that sticker. Behind it is what appears to be a reset button. Use a straight pin and you should be back in business.

I'll be glad to assist you in resolving the issue. I suggest that you reset the Media Player and check if it helps. To reset the Player, press the Reset button located underneath the device. You can use a sharp pointed object click paper clip or ball pen to reset the unit. If the issue persists, I suggest that you perform a System Recovery from the Repair and Formatting Tools option in the System Settings. You can try both Repair Disk and Format Disk option.

Just watching a movie and my archos just froze in mid play , did a switch off to rest it and guess what it wont restart , ses ARCHOS in green at the start but wont reeboot have tried the reset button inside but no joy what so ever , any tips or advice 'or shall i just ship it back to Archos ....

If you chose any of these options already your Os is gone.. 
try this solution 
I fixed my son's 605 4 GB had Recovery code (104) on it. This might work for other error codes too. These are the steps i followed 
* Use the computer for this process that you always used for this archos Archos should be plugged in to Pc before starting the process.
* Download the firware Upgrade 2.1
* Plug the Archos to Pc 
* When the white option screen comes up pick the format disk
* Wait until all done do not pick any option on archos after format is done Pc should recognize your archos in 5 seconds 
* Put the firmware in root section of the archos not in any folder.
* Safely remove the usb for Archos from your pc first and then unplug the cable.
* Do not pick any option on the Archos screen
* Just turn it off from the power button by holding it until it turns off
* Wait about 5 minutes and plug it back to pc 
* it will come up with white screen again but this time it will start Update you will see the progress bar moving, wait until it is all done, it will shut off. Turn it back on and  your archos will be back to normal

contract your manufacturer about replacement as there is no way to fix this on your own

Take the batteries out for 1 minute and replace, restart. It should ask for setup mode on restart (demo or regular mode). Tools > Settings > Firmware > Stop Demo Firmware. That's alot simpler. Or if that fails, there is a firmware reset where you hold the +volume button while powering up. This is a complete factory reset and reformat so any saved data will be lost.

It sounds like your Archos may have been doing a system update and was warning you not to turn the unit off during that update. Normally you could try and reset the unit to make it functional, but since you have already tried that process we will have to try a System Recovery. Fortunately the Archos does have a recovery process built into it, and you will have to take the following steps to run that process.

The first thing you will have to do is get the unit to start the recovery process. You should do the following:

1) Press the power button to turn on the unit.

2) Once the LCD screen turns on immediately press and hold the TV/LCD button until you see that the recovery mode has started. You should see a white screen on the LCD.

3) On your 605 you will need to navigate using your up/down buttons. Once the correct item is highlighted you will press OK.

4) You should see several choices on the recovery screen. The one you will be choosing is the Repair Disk option. The system will attempt to repair your files without actually erasing any of your data that you have saved to it. If this option fails you will the have to try the Format Disk option. This will reformat your disk, but in the process it will wipe out any and all data that you have saved to it. You will then have to reinstall any information that you had saved to the disk.

Once you have reformatted the disk you can then go ahead and reinstall the firmware for your unit. You can do this by using a computer to go to the following website:

The first box on the page is titled Firmware. You will use the drop down menu in the box to choose your model number and then download the latest firmware for your unit. Once you have chosen your model number the screen changes to a download screen that you will download the software from. Following those instructions should get your firmware installed and then allow you to once again use your unit.

If you are unable to get to the system recovery menu, or the unit will not allow you to either repair or format your disk then there is a defect inside your unit. If you have any warranty left on your unit you can take it to your local Archos repair center and have them fix it for free under the warranty. If the warranty has expired then you will have to pay for any repair out of your pocket. Due to the high cost of the labor for repairing electronics (some shops will charge up to $150.00 an hour for labor) you should get an estimate for the repair. You can then decide if the repair is worth doing.

Are you try this procedure...
1. connect the Archos 605 to the PC
2. click on repair
3. click on done and wait for a few seconds and you will see the archos as a drive in your windows (be patiant it takes some time)
4. once you see the drive, open it and make sure the System folder is empty, if not delete the file that exists there.
5. put the firmware update file directly on the root drive
6. click repair again on the archos and done.

Now it should recognize the update file and perform the update.

Also, I quoting some comments about this same problem:
1. In order to fix this issue, we are going to need to force the unit into a recovery application. In order to do this please make sure that the unit is completely shut off. When the unit is off, you are going to want to press and hold the TV/LCD button and the power button at the same time until a recovery code 101 pops onto the screen. As soon as you see this, let the buttons go.
Once you got this screen up, you are going to want to repair the operating system by arrowing down and clicking repair. After this is done it is going to ask you to connect your device to the computer and install an update file.
In order to do this, you are going to want to go to www.archos.com and go to downloads. You are going to want to download the firmware for your unit.
After the firmware is saved to your desktop, plug the unit into the computer and open up "My computer" and you should see the Archos in the list of drives.
Your going to want to copy the firmware onto the root directory and not in any file folders. Once the firmware is on the Root directory, go ahead and unplug the unit from the computer. It should still say Please plug your device into the computer and install an update file. Click OK. After this isdone, it is going to tell you to please connect DC or USB in to continue with the update. Go ahead and let the unit install and reboot. After this is done, you should be able to use the unit properly. If the unit still does not work properly, we are going to have to create an RMA for the Archos.

2. VIDEO: Last fix for recovery errors to open Archos and take the HDD out swap with another one if it is possible and turn on the device and turn it off put the original Hdd in. ATTANTION THIS WILL AVOID YOUR FACTORY WARRANY. do not recommended if you are not good with removing very small screws and electronic parts.

Welcome to Fixya. If you want to connect the archos 5 to your computer you just need to connect the archos directly to the computer without the docking station. I have attach the Manual of your archos 5 so that you will know how to use the function and how to transfer files from PC to archos and Vice Versa. Please refer to page 54 Connecting archos to Computer.

Mini Dock is used to charge archos and to view image on your TV.

Underneath the device you have 2 rectangular ports the smaller one is the usb port.

after reseting my archos 605 my touch screen has stoped functioning properly i youch 1 part of the screen and it keep going to my menu bar i hit video it will open the menu bar or any part of the screen i touch it opens the menu bar

when i turn it on it goes to a white screen with a blue line across on the very top it says recovery code 108 the next line says "would you like to recover your system?" then it gives me three options no, repair disk, and format disk. I dont know what to do cam body help me?

I have the same problem. After trying the adjust the volume on the screen, it went all the way down and slided back to mute everytime after I pulled it up. The volume button on the right didn't work either. I called Archos tech support on Feb 13, 2011 and they said they no longer fix this product because it's 4, 5 years old. But they would offer me a 15% discount for an upgrade. Why would I want to buy the same brand again if it's so unreliable?
