Hi,

1. Select 2nd option "Repair" or 3rd "Format the disk"
2. Connect 605 to PC using USB wire and find the Driver named "a405" or similar words
3. Copy a firmware to the ROOT directory on the driver mentioned above
4. Keep the USB connected and select "OK" on 405
5. Re-calibrate the screen under Display menu on 405.

The firmware file needs to be name exactly as it is downloaded. I downloaded both OSv2.1.0.4 and OSv2.0.1.0 firmwares to the same folder on my PC. Obviously enough I had to give them different names on the disk, I tried both and neither worked. It turns out the recovery system will not use any firmware unless it is named "firmware_a405f.aos". So if you're like me, copy the firmware over to the root of the USB-drive and then rename to firmware_a405f.aos.

When I switch on my Archos device, the following message is displayed: "Would you like to recover your system?" What does it mean and what should I do?

You are on the recovery mode screen. It means that your hard drive has been damaged and must be repaired or formatted.
With this system recovery mode, you will have to select between "Repair Disk" and "Format Disk".
Start by selecting "Repair Disk" and follow the instructions displayed on the screen. See the full PDF manual (available on the Archos web site) on how to use the Repair and Format options.

If repairing the disk did not work, try formatting the disk by selecting "Format Disk". Note that the formatting will erase all data.

If you still cannot restart your Archos after trying a system recovery, you should contact Archos technical support.

It has been infected with a virus. Get an anti virus loaded or get it flushed with one. That will remove it & allow you full access.

It means that there is a hard drive error due to damage. The hard drive can be repaired by selecting 'Repair Disk'.

In albums you cant shuffle the songs there is no way to do it.But you can shuffle the songs in play list.

1)In “Playlist” you have shuffle mode:
2)“Shuffle”: randomly shuffles the order of the songs in the current playlist.

Steps:
1)In the Music mode, you can access the Music Player settings screen by using the
“Settings” menu item
2)Use the left/right arrows to select a different setting for a parameter.

Iv had this go to your Archos and do RECOVERY Then go to your computer load the Archos programe. Go to you archos account and find the updates for your Archos. Right click and SAVE TO YOUR COMPUTER NAME IT Archos 1..Do the same with the secound and third Updates if there are anymore.
Now you will need to see your Saved program which should be on your desktop and your Archos in your MY COMPUTER Reduce both these so you can see them .

Well, if you REALLY want to purchase one I'm sure they will be able to sell you one, but you can download one free from the manufacturer's web site at http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/manuals.html?country=us&lang=en

Your post/description indicates a possible problem with the firmware. It would seem that the Archos 605 would load but fail to finish and there restarts itself. This could only be possible if somehow the firmware has been corrupted or you tried a firmware upgrade but failed halfway.

There are several versions of the 605, you need to determine which one you have.

Things you can try:
1. Do a soft reset. Press on the power button for about 15 seconds;
2. Do a full/hard reset by removing the batteries and pressing the master reset button;
3. Try again the Systems Recovery. You may need also to format the internal HD but that would mean you loose whatever data is inside.

Alternately, you may need to update/re-install the firmware. A more complete and better explained firmware update procedures are here. Briefly, you have to download and save in your PC the ???????.aos file (there are several versions of the firmware. You need to determine which one is appropriate to your model), connect your 605 to the PC, copy/paste (drag & drop) the said file to the Archos device listed in "My Computer" (you may have to overwrite the older copy), disconnect 605, proceed to System Settings, tap on "Update Firmware". Follow on screen instructions.

If the above is not corrective, am afraid that your unit has been partially bricked. Some have reported serious hardware or firmware problems with the 605 that would require replacement by the manufacturer.

The drive of the 405 is formatted in FAT32,so you can´t manage files bigger than 2gb.
