Dear Pl. check the memory received., If your fax setting is not done for memory setting i.e. when you receive a fax that immediately printed .Then the fax machine is right some times voice calls also generated if it was given earlier for that or used for voice call, so caller may try to communicate for voice call and got the fax tone (as the fax machine is in auto mode),he simple disconnect the line. and fax machine may display some error message. Thanks.

change the Cartridge! come on! the instructions are IN the machine!

If these are new cartridges, make sure you removed all of the protective plastic wrap that comes when packaged.  usually its red , yellow or orange plastic tab that should be removed.
If these are not new cartridges, you may need to try another set. 
Try running the head cleaning utility under the printer utilities options HP is very good at having this utility available to trouble shoot most common problems.  If you don't have this utility, try updating your printer driver. (basically uninstall the printer and download the driver from the HP website, and reinstall the printer using the latest driver).

You need to ensure that you have the correct cable from your telephone socket to the fax machine. Unfortunately wer purchased two new hp office jet 7610 which do not come with cabling and we could not get the fax to work. I spent 3 days on the telephone with hp and British Telecom each of which blamed it on each other. After doing some research on the internet I discovered that hp require a strange cable formant which is called a 'cross-over cable' is required. You will need to press menu repeatedly until reports appears. Then use the left and right arrow keys to find the sent journal. Then press ok. It will should print the last 40 faxes.

Hello T There this may work for you, it has worked for many here I given this advice so gave it a try it could work for you. Generally when this happens, something has fallen into the printer, or a piece of paper has been jammed in there.

First step, remove the ink cartridge, and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it, see if anything comes out.

If nothing goes, or you can't hear anything rattling around, get a piece of cardstock paper (60lb or heavier) and gently push this through the printer, to see if it will help push out what might be stuck in there.
And gave the rode that the ink slides on a good clean and maybe a bit oil on cloth and wipe the rod with it.

Check print out from system, if its good printer is good, you can suspect other side fax machine..Generally most of the fax machines are "Thermal Technology" black & white scaled machines, this technology is old, we can't expect that much quality print outs..

I bet you a 'copy', or received faxes would be the same, and it would have been very helpful had you thought to include that info. Also is the model number you your question posted under correct? If all this is true, you just have a dried up ink cartridge -replace it

The two aren`t related, you must have pressed a button that changed the `reception mode` to Manual from either `auto` or `tad`
