I am trying to get the amp working through my tv

Contrary to the instructions included with most AVR's...

You don't need to take video out from the TV to the receiver. Once it gets to the TV it has found its ultimate destination.

And you don't NEEDS to GET audio FROM a TV either, unless it tunes stations from its own antenna.

Otherwise the SAT/Cable box can provide analog audio to the TV for watching lo-fi programming like news with the Onkyo OFF; and you can run digital multichannel directly to the Onkyo for its special treatment.

Running either hi-end audio or high-end video to a device that doesn't absolutely need it wastes expensive cabling and introduces a couple more connections to worry about.

Hi,

This is usually an indication that either there is a problem with the power supply or there is a short circuiting. I would advise you not to play the receiver as this clicking noise could cause damage to other internal components. You need to open the receiver and check for the faulty wiring or circuitry. Make sure that the receiver is getting appropriate voltage.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

If the receiver is indicating "overload" or "protect" there is a load on the system. Turn the receiver off and remove all speakers and wires, turn receiver on and reduce the volume right down, if the word "overload or protect" stays off! it means there is a short in the wiring or one of the speakers. If however the word "overload or protect" comes on when turned on, it indicates a short in one or more of the audio output ic's in your receiver, this is where you will need a tv technician to troubleshoot further. If you not sure about checking it out just call a professional in to have the unit assessed.

When my reciever is powered

I am not clear about the configuration of your Onkyo receiver connections.

Are you watching channels from the cable box or a DVD in DVR on the TV through the Receiver? In that case have you connected the cable box and the DVR to HDMI IN inputs of the Receiver. How is the TV connected to the Receiver? HDMI OUT or component out, etc.

If the problem has started recently and you have not changed any setup on the Receiver, then it is possible it is loosing part of the setup memory which is a flash ROM. The good thing is that the receiver has 3-5 years warranty depending on where you are located. So do not try any repairs yourself and make sure you have the purchase receipt somewhere.

Try the factory default reset first and see if this makes any difference to the problem.

To reset the AV receiver/AV amplifier to its factory

defaults, turn it on and, while holding down the

[VCR/DVR] button, press the [STANDBY/ON] button.

"Clear" will appear on the display and the AV
receiver/AV amplifier will enter Standby mode.

However, this means you will have to reprogram everything - speaker setup, tuner setup, input /output connection assignment - the lot.

In case you need further assistance on this problem, then please clarify the connection setup you are using as I have mentioned at the top.

Please post a comment to confirm if this was helpful.

I have an onkyo reciver and 7.1 speaker system.

I assume you mean the subwoofer remains silent during the test. Perhaps the subwoofer is where we should be looking.

If you jack it into one or both of the Tape Out connectors and play some music with substantial low bass, does it make any sound? This would at least prove it is alive.

Cannot find code to set my cable remote to turn

The Remote Code 1789 will both turn ON and also turn OFF the Onkyo TX-SR605 AV/Receiver. Many codes will either turn it on or turn it off, but not both. Code 1789 will do both.

I receive only picture

Sorry even though you have provided a lot of detail about the components you have connected to the Onkyo receiver, I am very unclear about the configuration that is not working properly.

1. I will assume that when you connect HDMI output from COMCAST to Onkyo and then video pass-through HDMI from Onkyo to Sony TV then you are getting proper video on TV and sound from Onkyo. Is that correct?

2. I will assume when you connect the PS3 HDMI output to Onkyo with video pass-through HDMI from Onkyo to TV, then you are also getting proper sound and video.

3. I will assume when you connect the Apple TV HDMI output to TV HDMI input then you are getting proper sound and video from TV.

4. I will assume that when you connect HDMI output from COMCAST to Onkyo HDMI input and also the Apple TV HDMI output to Onkyo and then video pass-through HDMI from Onkyo to Sony TV you are getting no sound from Onkyo and only flashes of video on Apple TV. I am assuming you are using HDMI input 1 and input 2 to connect the COMCAST and Apple TV? Is that correct?

Are you aware that AppleTV does not support HD TV mode?
Please confirm if situation 4 is the problem you are having. Also is your Onkyo SR605 or SR705?
You have written 605 and one place and 705 at the other.

Will be happy to help you sort this out when you provide the clarification above.

Need Assistance: I connected

You likely need a separate audio cable for the DVD player, depending on what inputs your are plugging into on the receiver.

If you are using the component video connections (3 VIDEO connectors usually Red, Blue, Green) this is just for the video. You likely need 2 for audio. Look for L and R connections near the other three connectors on both the receiver and the DVD player.

If you are using an HDMI cable, this will carry both audio and vido but you may need to go into a setup menu on the Onkyo and set it to AUTO input or choose a HDMI for the DVD input.

Can hear volume on tv

Many people who use A/V receivers use them to switch only the audio. ie, hook up all your video sources to the TV, and switch between these sources using the TV remote. Just connect the audio cables from your video gear to the Onkyo. The reason is that video signals are more susceptible to problems in A/V receivers than audio signals. better to connect the video sources directly to the TV.

You may want to ask for more clarification about this.
