I would first check and replace the cables to make sure you have clean signal. If that all checks out then I would consider putting in an amplifier in line to boost your signal. What is the distance you have on the cables all combined? Another thing to check in troubleshooting is to remove everything (cables) except the unit you are experiencing trouble with. If after all of this I would say your connection to your component itself is suspect.

This may require quite a bit more info. Verify that there are no shorts in the speaker connections to the Denon - it has a short detection circuit that will shut down the audio amps in the event of a short. If you are using optical or coaxial digital input for you audio - verify that the correct digital input has been assigned to the component selected on the Source Select dial: Menu > Source Select > Assign > Digital. If this is an HDMI connection go into the HDMI setup menu and select Audio: AMP: Menu > Manual Setup > HDMI Setup > Audio > AMP. If it is set to TV the audio passes through the AMP without being decoded and goes to the TV instead: there is no 'Both' setting.

It appears there are at least four models of ipod docks for your model receiver: ASD-11R, ASD-1R, ASD-3W, and ASD-3N.

The users manual for your receiver does say that in its default settings, the VCR inputs are used as ipod inputs, so it sounds like you are certainly following the manual correctly for defaults. You can custom-assign the iPod to a connector other than VCR (using the GUI menu “Source Select” – “(input source to which iPod dock assigned)” – “Assign” – “iPod dock” (page 42). It might be worth following this up incase for some reason your default doesn't happen to be VCR - it may be looking (listening) somewhere else.

If you have the RF Remote Controller (RC-7000CI) or RF Remote
Receiver (RC-7001RCI), these devices are supposed to allow you to browse your ipod when connected, and would therefore be helpful in ascertaining that the denon was recognizing the ipod but not playing the music, or not recognizing that the ipod was connected period.



I would certainly review the Play, Playback, and Assign menus regarding your ipod dock configuration, as well as make sure my ipod had the latest firmware updated. (I have seen the latter be the deciding factor.) There is also a firmware update for your receiver at the link I posted at the top, and it never hurts to keep components up-to-date, especially when they aren't behaving the way the ought to.

Possible causes & solutions, in order of simplicity:
1. Wrong input selected on TV - Reconfirm you have selected the input corresponding to the receiver's MON. OUT connection, e.g., component video, S-video.
2. Wrong output set on receiver - Reconfirm you haven't previously selected an output on the receiver that is unavailable on your TV, e.g., on some receivers, HDMI cannot be used for on-screen display. The front panel may show the setting as a backup for no on-screen display. If not, you may have to reset the receiver to factory defaults -- find out how to do this in the manual.
3. For component video or HDMI only -- Output signal from receiver may be set to a mode that the TV cannot process, e.g. 720p for a TV with only 480i/480p/1080i capability.
4. If the receiver is a high-end model with "Pure Direct" or similar settings that have been selected, the video circuitry and possibly also the OSD may be unavailable. Try switching to a normal setting or another input.
By the way, the usual term for the menus from an AV receiver is "on-screen display (OSD)" -- not "GUI (graphical user interface)," which is more appropriate for computers or cell phones.

Does it think you have headphones connected? If you have headphones, check to see if they have sound output.

I am assuming you are connected HDMI?
This is a common problem when connected with HDMI. HDMI checks for HDCP codes every three seconds and if it doesnt get the proper response from the devices or repeater (amp) it will drop the connection and ask again in 3 seconds. If it receives the proper key it will display the signal again.

I hate to say this but HDMI is not perfect yet so there may not be a solution to this except to drop your inputs and outputs to component video and digital audio. The only source that will be effected from a resolution stand point is a BluRay which can only display 720p or 1080i (not 1080p) when ran through component video.

Please rephrase you get an "ant screen"?

Does the sound work? What is your hdmi video output device?

At any rate, you can also try this quick fix. In the setup menu go to Source Select. Make sure these settngs are right:

Assign>HDMI = HDMI 1 - 4 (depending on device)
Input Mode>Input Mode = Auto
Decod Mode>Decode Moe = Auto
Other>Video Convert = On

Set this for sources (devices) you have connected to the hdmi.

I think your receiver has cracked main (amplifier) board close to surround back channel terminals. Need to take apart the receiver remove the board, inspect it and resolder cracked traces. Unfortunately it is not so easy to remove that board and probably you need to bring it to a repair shop.
