Receiver does not have a cooling fan and it
If the unit does not have a cooling fan then it is just cooled by convection ie air moving past the fins. What happens is just dust collecting on the cooling fins and they cannot get rid of the heat fast enough. With a fan the moving air does more with smaller fins. They will also get coated and overheat.
The fix for both is easy. It is simply to use compressed air to blow it out, You just squirt the air into the air holes to blow off the parts inside. Reverse the air and do this again a few times. The back and forth with dislodge any thicker buildups and lint pet hair etc. Since there is no cooling fan you don;t have to worry about the fan bearings. The air can over speed the fan and damage the bearing or bushing in the fan.
Any computer shop or electronics store will have compressed air in a can for cleaning keyboards and so on. If you have gas heat, or dusty roads or pets or use cooking oils, perfumes and so on these all cause dust buildup and eventually overheating. It usually happens much faster with a fan. If you know how old the unit is and if there was no dust storm etc then you can guess at how long it will be before you should clean this again. On a laptop in my house it is 6 months to about a year. Just takes a minute the it is cool again.
