It sounds like it is working correctly. That's how they work when you don't want to be disturbed.

Will not hold charge / shuts off

the batteries may need replacement. 2 aaa size ni-mh 560 mah 1.2 v are required. or the charger may be defective. If the charging light or the battery bars show up in display when placed in the cradle, the charger may not be defective.

How do I retrieve recorded messages from an outside phone?

You can access the answering system remotely by dialing your home telephone number from any touch-tone telephone. To remotely access the answering system Dial your telephone number from any touch-tone telephone. When the answering system answers, enter the two-digit remote access code (19, unless you have changed it). The answering system automatically announces the number of messages (new or old) if there are any. If there are new messages, the answering system automatically begins to play new messages only. -OR If there are no new messages, the answering system automatically begins to play all old messages. You can also enter the remote commands: Play all messages 1 Press to listen to all messages. If there are new messages, the system plays back only the new messages (oldest first). If there are no new messages, the system plays back all old messages (oldest first). Play new messages 2 Press to listen to new messages only. Delete a message 3 Press during message playback to delete the current message. Delete all old messages 3 Press to delete all old messages. Replay current message or previous message 4 To repeat the message currently playing, press 4 after the answering system plays the day and time the current message was received. To listen to the previous message, press 4 while the answering system is playing the day and time the current message was received. Stop 5 Press to stop playback and recording. Play help menu * 5 Press to listen to a list of remote commands. Skip to next message 6 Press during playback to skip the current message and advance to the next message. Record a announcement 7 Press to record a new announcement. Begin speaking after the long beep. Turn system on or off 0 Press to turn the answering system on or off. NOTES: If you do not enter a valid remote access code, the system answers the call automatically. If the date and time is not set when a message is recorded, the system announces, "Time and date not set" before the answering system announces the number of messages. If there are no messages in the answering system, the system announces, "You have no message." If there are no new messages in the answering system, when you press 2 to play back new messages, the system announces, "You have no new message." If you pause for more than four seconds during remote access, you hear a help menu listing all features and commands. If there is no command for another 20 seconds, the call ends automatically. If the memory is full, the answering system answers after 10 rings and announces, "Memory is full. Enter the remote access code." Enter your remote access code to access the messages and announcements. When the answering system is turned off, the telephone answers after 10 rings and announces, "Please enter your remote access code."

From the Uniden support site. You can first try a Basic Reset.

A reset is done by following the below steps: 1. Disconnect the battery from handset(s) 2. Disconnect Phone Cord from wall jack 3. Disconnect Phone cord from base unit 4. Disconnect AC adapter from wall outlet 5. Allow to sit for 30 min 6. Reconnect Phone Cord to base 7. Reconnect Phone cord to wall jack 8. Reconnect AC Adapter to wall outlet 9. Reconnect battery into handset until you click or feel the plug snap into place 10. Re-Register Handset by placing on main base reference

One of my extension phones is dead. It's a phone that's not used much so I suspect the battery died but would like to know for sure.

Yes. The battery will go bad if they are not cycled regularly. You should be able to get a replacement from radio shack. Make sure to recycle the old batteries at a drop at lowes so they will not end up in a land fill.

My voice mail doesn't work. I cannot get more than 2 rings on my incoming calls.

Press.MENU/SELECT > Ans. Setup menu > Ring Time submenu Select a Ring time - Toll Saver, 2, 4 or 6 rings. Press MENU/SELECT once again to get a confirmation tone. The Toll saver setting is for if you are checking voicemail on a Long distance call, the call rolls over to the voicemail immediately if there are new messages

Handset says searching

Searching means its searching for a signal. If the phone cant contact the base it will say searching. Make sure the handset is in range of the base and the base is connected to the power.

I cannot use my * star key or my # key on my phones. I need to use it to log into my voice mail with Charter. I need to use #99.

The contact(s) may be dirty or worn out. (Do this at your own risk...) Take apart the phone until you can get to the rubber membrane and find the contacts that correspond to the # and * keys... Now with a pencil put some graphite(conductive) on the black pads. Now put the phone back together and it should work temporarily until you can buy a new one
