Kenmore progressive upright canister vacuum
I had the same problem and so my husband took our vacuum apart. I cleaned what I could and discovered that there is a foam filter that sits below a dark gray cover immediately beneath the bag (on the floor of the inside of the vacuum). This is different from the HEPA filter. I cleaned this off (ours had a lot of dog hair on it) and placed it back in the slot. The vacuum is not making the noise anymore and the suction is even improved. I had not noticed the suction had deteriorated as the vacuum still worked well in my opinion. I hope that this helps and that you have the same problem. It was very easy to fix. I believe the noise was due to the impairment to the suction. Good Luck!

My handi-mate Jr. is not spinning anymore.
Assuming you don't have a broken belt, you can pretty much completely disassemble the Handimate and clean it out, which should fix "it won't spin any more." Part of the cleaning procedure is pretty obvious - there are tabs on the side that hold the top onto the bottom. Just lift the side flaps on the top section that surround the tabs to release the top section. Pay attention to how the thing is put together so you can reassemble it - there aren't many parts - it's not rocket science. Now the part that's not obvious: it's not too hard to pull the axle out of the cylinder to which the brushes are attached. Gunk, hair and fibers can get caught under the white end caps and around the axle.

Dirt Devil Repair
Any warranty dealer for Dirt Devil should be able to supply a schematic for that machine. They have access to the dealer web site and can download the information.

High pitched sound when power on
I had a vacuum cleaner that did the same thing. My vacuum had three suction levels. The noise level would decrease as I lowered the level. I also noticed that when I turned the vacuum off the sound didn't stop instantly, it wound down/faded off as the motor slowed down. I found the problem to be the bearings in the main motor. I've been told that the motor that powers the carpet brushes can also make the sound if the motor bearing fails.
