ipod white screen

Hiya, I was wondering if you had any ideas on how to solve the problem I'm having with my sons 3rd Gen ipod? The screen is white when turned on and I cannot see any writing or icons. The ipod is recognised in itunes, plays the tunes on it and can be updated. Tried the 5 R's, I get a dark line across the screen but nothing else(different positions!) I've checked, unlugged and reconnected the connections inside and they seem to be fine. I was going to buy a screen replacement but don't want to go to the expense if its not faulty. I've checked around the net and apart from 'Zolved', can't find anything useful. I would be grateful for any suggestions you might have, thanks Gill

Reset the iPod:

  1. Turn the Hold switch on, then back to off.
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for 10 seconds (until the Apple logo appears).
  3. You may need to repeat the reset several times.
If the reset doesn't help, then put the iPod into forced disk mode.

Put iPod into Disk Mode:

Apple suggests that you ensure your iPod is charged before following the next step. How exactly you check a charge on an iPod screen that is completely white has yet to be revealed. But hey, give it a shot anyway. Plug the iPod into a high-powered USB port, let it sit for 2 hours, then disconnect it. If you have a wall charger, plug in the iPod, then follow these steps while it is still plugged in.
  1. Turn the Hold switch on, then back to off.
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears
  3. Immediately switch your figures to press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until "Disk Mode" appears at the top.

For a lot of people, this solves the problem. Connect the iPod to the computer and (assuming it shows up) reset the iPod again to get it out of Disk Mode. If at this point you still have the white screen, restore the iPod using the restore function in iTunes under the Summary tab (this will erase everything on the iPod and put it at factory settings).

Don't disconnect or eject the iPod until the store is totally done. After you think it's done, wait another five minutes.

From the link Noggin posted I was able to unlock my iPod: Here is some brief explanation: 1. Connect iPod to your computer, it have to be the same one you used the first time to sync your iPod. 2. open iTunes. 3. disconnect iPod from the computer 4. It should no longer be locked. 5. Change the 4 digit passcode If this doesn't work you will have to restore it back to factory settings: 1. Make a backup, the restore process will delete all your songs and files! 2. Connect your iPod to the computer and wait until your itunes detects it. 3. Click the restore button and follow the instructions. * I have never done the restore process so I cannot help you further...

ipod not recognized by computer or itunes

When I plug my ipod into my computer, it doesn't show up anywhere. Neither in "My Computer" or itunes. I'm running Windows XP Professional. I've tried resetting and forcing it to disk mode, reinstalling itunes, changed USB ports, and all the other possible solutions offered by the help web site. It was suggested that I take it to an Apple store for repair. It still plays music and videos that are downloaded on it, it just won't sync up with itunes.I have more music and videos that I wish to install on it.

I struggled with this issue for a while and finally found a post that helped me. Hold menu and the center buttons until the iPod turns off. Then, immediately hold the left and center buttons to pull up the iPod diagnostic menu. Scroll down to the option "Reset" and select it. My iPod was finally recognized by iTunes. Good luck :)

First make sure your hold switch isn't on. It's on the top or bottom and slides back and forth. It needs to be switched to the left. Once it is to the left, here's how you reset:

You can reset your ipod by holding down the menu and select (round button in the center) buttons down for at least 10 seconds. You'll see an apple logo flash, that's when you stop pressing the buttons. It will shut off, then back on.

If that doesn't work, try a restore. This will return it go factory settings.

How to restore iPod

  1. Ensure that you have an active Internet connection as new versions of iTunes and iPod Software may need to be downloaded to your computer.
  2. Download and install the latest version of iTunes if you do not already have it installed.
  3. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
  4. After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
  5. Select your iPod in the Source panel and you will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.
  6. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:
    • Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
    • Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available.
    • Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software available.
    • Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod Software available.
  7. If you are using a Mac, a message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator’s name and password.
  8. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will present one of two messages on screen with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
    • Restore Instruction 1: Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
    • Restore Instruction 2: Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
  9. During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
  10. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

First, try to restore using iTunes. If this doesn't work, place your iPod in disk mode (hold the menu and center buttons down togther) and as soon as you see the Apple symbol come up hold the center and play (bottom) buttons down together until you see a check mark (disk mode). It may take a few trys.

Now connect your iPod to your computer. Go to my computer and right click the drive associate with your iPod (for example F: ) and scroll down to FORMAT. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT - CHOOSE FAT32 and then check the "Quick Format" box. After you do this then use iTunes to Restore your iPods another time.

Yes, well the exact thing it happening to me. What you could do and see if it works is this: Turn the Screen Lock on, off, and hold the center button and the Menu button. This will hard reset the iPod and use the origonal settings from when you first got your iPod. The second Tip: Take off all of the software, songs, games, ect. in iTunes and reset ALL the settings in iTunes. If this doesn't doesnt work (which it should), your iPod is broken and you need a new click wheel or center button.
