Go back and check the drum and make sure that you did not bump something else out of alignment while installing it; you should not get a paper change light from changing the drum.

The remove output light is flashing on my printer

There are two pivioting flaps where the paper exits the printer on top. These flaps raise as the paper comes out of the printer and then fall back down after the paper has exited the printer.. The flap on the right has a tab that trips a paper sensor above it, this tab ofter breaks and it will not trip the sensor. This causes the printer to think the top output tray is full and wants you to "Remove Output". Some times you can push that right flap back towards the back of the printer and it will trip the sensor, then you will get a ready light and you can print. Be aware if you push to hard you can break the flap. This worked for me. Be carefull !! I am in the process of tracking down the part number and order process. I will post the results later.

I need to print 5X8 index cards on my Dell 1720dn.

Are you using the manual feed slot in front of the printer and setting the paper size properly in your software? 3x5 is supported by Dell so this should work.

Dell 1720 printer prints junk first page with only ?Z@ troofpaN.

This is a issue with the printer drive that windows is holding, not the printer. To Un-install your printer drive the correct way, goto add/remove programs, and un-install the printer there, then open up your printer control panel and right click where there is no printer. In the right click menu click server properties, then click the drivers tab, then remove the 1720/1720dn drivers there. A system restart will be necessary in most cases before it will let you remove the drivers(the Microsoft print spooler is to blame here for that). If this still doesn't work for you, then install a hp laserjet 4 driver and see if it does the same thing. if not, then it is something with the driver/spooler, if so, then it is the MCU of the printer, and you might want to look at buying a new printer.

It means that a sensor is reading that there is paper still present. Play with the little flaps on top of the printer to see if that helps you. This is the most common sensor failures on this model printer.

Paper Jammed totally removed but indicator still

Here is a very key fix to the problem described:
The 2 rollers which help feed paper get slippery and don't work well after a while. These rollers are found by flipping the unit over (after removal of the toner/drum/paper drawers) and exposing them (they are towards the front of the unit). The two rollers have one rubber band each which provide friction. Just remover the rubber bands (black), flip them "inside out" and replace on the unit. This will expose a new surface, an viola!... virtually double the life of the roller... The other option is to obtain a roller replacement unit from DELL/LEXMARK. They are aware of the problem and have a "kit" to service the unit. Good Luck!....

I use to get thousands of copies from one cart -

DELL has two types of toner cartridges for your printer:
- a 3000 Page Standard Yield Toner Cartridge (Manufacturer Part# : RP441 | Dell Part# : 310-8701)
- a 6,000 Page High Yield Toner
(Manufacturer Part# : GR332 | Dell Part# : 310-8700)

The Toner yield is based on printing pages with 5% page coverage in accordance with ISO/IEC 19752 testing methodology. Yields vary with usage and environmental conditions.
In practice, depending on what type of documents you print, one cartridge can print much less than the quantity of prints advertised.

You might perhaps bought before a high capacity (more expensive cartrige)?
Also, if you are using compatible (not original Dell cartridges) or reffils of the original cartriges , the yeld of the cartrige may vary.

I can not find a replacement part for this, maybe try to remove it then glue it together, could be a temp fix.

It prints gibberish before the print job.

I have had this happen before, this could be you need to change the drum kit on the printer itself, check the indicator light.

Dell 1720 lazer printer only printing solid black pages

The corona wire is not charging the drum properly. Try pulling the toner cartridge out and then re-seating it. If this doesn't work, try a new toner cartridge as the corona wire is usually included in the cartridge.

If you are using a refill toner, there's an outside chance that the supplier put toner with the wrong electric charge in the cartridge. Again, changing the cartridge should fix this(assuming the replacement is from another batch).
