My Whirlpool a/c is rattling, unsure if it's the
If your unit has a 'fan only' setting, choose this.
As an alternative, set the temp control so the compressor is not running.
If the rattle is still present, then it comes from the fan, not the compressor.
Depending on the construction, replacing the fan should be possible without disturbing the coolant lines.
If the compressor is at fault, it can only be replaced by a pro since it will require equipment not normally found a home.
If the fan is the cause, check with Johnstone Supply if one is in your area, to look for a replacement.
They deal primarily with tradespeople so their pricing is much lower than a dealer will ask.
They have never asked for proof that I am a professional although their business is primarily wholesale.

Coils freeze up
Make sure blower is running at the proper speed, if it's running to slow do to bad bearing or capacitor, the coil will freeze up.
Check evaporator coil and filter to see if they are dirty if they are then the coil will freeze up
Check the charge if it's low on refrigerant the coil will freeze up.
If your not sure how to check these things, then you should have a HVAC company, check it out for you.

My r7184P, I have to keep pressing the reset
The reset button may be tripping because of air flow restriction.. The filter may be dirty or the evaporator coil may be clogged if this is the case you need to clean the coil with a coil cleaner available at home improvement stores. It also could be the bi-metal in the swith itself has gone bad in that case the cord needs to be replaced. The cord problem happens when there has been an electrical storm or a heavy power surge. Its not often but it does occur.
Good Luck on your repairs

Freezing up
I suspect your air filter is clogged with dust. The front inside panel of the air conditioner should be removable. Take it off to get at the filter. The filter for most of these window units looks like a thin piece of foam. Take this out; rinse off all the dust in a sink or outside using a hose, and then reinstall it. Hopefully this will fix your problem.
