Dimension 4600 does not recognize cd/dvd drives

Open the computer, and check if the cables that go to the CD/DVD drive are connected. If so, try downloading and installing the drivers for the disc drives. I hope you get it fixed!

Check your bios settings to make sure your video settings are correct for whatever card you're using. It sounds like you have a conflict between an onboard video card, and an aftermarket card.

How do I fix error codes pxe-e61 and pxe-mof

The fix will depend on exactly what is wrong. The messages mean that your computer can't read the hard disc and find a boot OS. The drive may have failed, the cable might be loose, or the MBR (masterboot record) is bad. First make sure that you do not have a CD/DVD in your optical drive, a floppy in your 3.5" drive or an external hard drive attached to one of the USB ports. (The computer may be trying to boot to one of them.) Next press F2 when you turn on the computer (press repeatedly). This will let you enter the BIOS to set the disc boot order. (Check that the hard disk is listed first. This also indicates that the computer sees a hard drive in the machine.) If you get the error message again, try the entire procedure again from turning on the computer.Next try using the appropriate Windows install/update disc to repair your system.(The Dell 4600 came with XP and you need the correct SP on the disc. If you kept up on the updates, it should be SP3.) Put the CD in the optical drive then restart the computer. Press F12 repeatedly to get the boot selection menu. (The same repeat routine may be needed if you miss the timing.) Use this disk to enter the Recovery Console and attempt to repair the Master Boot record.Use the directions here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4600/en/4600i/sm/index.htm to check if the cable is connected properly. You will need to open the case. This Dell came with an IDE hard drive. These often have a jumper that indicates the boot order. The jumper must be set to master or cable select and be attached at the master position on the IDE cable. This is the connection at the very end of the cable. The IDE cable can come loose from the motherboard, as well. You can also try a different cable. The final option is to replace the hard disc. Unplug the old hard drive from the IDE cable first. You'll need the Windows install disc and then to reinstall all of your drivers and programs. Move the bad disc to the slave position on the IDE cable. See if you can salvage any of your files from the hard drive. (Sometimes, putting the drive in a ziploc bag and placing it in the freezer for several days will let you read the disk when you put it back in the computer.) I hope this helps. Cindy Wells

Upgrade compatibilty

You can upgrade the more the merrier in my opinion however Dell can often be integrated parts that means you have to purchase goods from Dell. You may have a model that is not that way. So depending check out your RAM and see how much you have, you can always get more but there is a limit on the board. So go to Dell.com and check out the stats of your motherboard for upgrades to that board. Go to support and downloads. Or surf around do not trust just any web page for this information Dell is articular with its boards. You can always get a Combo DVD-RW Combo which will read and write CD's as well. That is why it is a combo drive. They fit just about any computer and you can get those online cheap or your local retailer. Video cards are integrated in the board see if you have PCI or AGP slot available it depends on your model. You can use a video card other than the one attached to the motherboard. Make sure the slots are compatible. There is usually one AGP and several PCI slots maybe one or two extra depending on the case and board. So you have your research and work cut out for you. I hope I somewhat explained what is entailed in an upgrade for your Dell start at the dell.com website first and seek out your specific model. I have provided a link for you Click This

What causes red led on starting?

Remove Power Cord then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then put the cord back in and try to start it.When you press the Power Button are you hearing the fans run, the disk drive running, the cd drive click and the light on it comes on for a second or two?Anything shows up on the LCD Screen? If you press the power button and absolutely nothing is happening then you most likely have a bad power supply. If you press the power button and you start hearing beep sounds or blinking lights in a continuous pattern (ex. 1 long followed by 2 short) then you have a motherboard issue. Those beep sounds and blinking lights tells the technician what is going on with the computer.
