I found a fix for this problem on another forum, It's caused by some blown capacitors on the main power board. I have a link to the original post, with step by step pictures for replacing the blown capacitors but don't know if it's ok to post it here. The repair cost me £7.49 for 5 capacitors RS part number 526-1109 and about £4.50 of that was for next day postage. I did the job myself in about 15 minutes and I have no experience with a soldering iron (i even had to borrow one). I replaced 3 capacitors, 2 of which looked blown and one which just looked swollen.

Remove the back off your tv, and just take a look at the small array of capacitors near the top right corner of the centrally situated power board. there are 4 identical capacitors rated at 1000uf 10v 105 degrees C. I think the silver capacitor lids should be flat or even slightly concave. The ones I replaced were all slightly convex and 2 of them had a tiny amount of what looked like brown corrosion right in the centre of the caps.

For a few quid I'm sure you could get someone else to do the soldering if you lack confidence.

The original post also linked to a supplier of the main power board for £130. I didn't mind having a go myself because I figured if I fouled up I could always just buy the board.

Updating the Channel List Automatically You can update the channel list when the broadcaster adds new Services or if you move the TV to a new location.

1. Press the MENU button to display the menu. Press the ▲ or ▼ button to select "Digital Menu", then press the ENTER button.

2. Press the ▲ or ▼ button to select "Channel", then press the ENTER button.

3. Press the ENTER button again, to select "Country".

4. Select the appropriate country by pressing the ▲ or ▼ button. Press the ENTER button to confirm your choice. Even though you have changed the country setting in this menu, the country setting for Analogue TV is not changed. (Refer to page 11 of the user guide)

5. Press the ▲ or ▼ button again, to select "Auto Store". Press the ENTER button. When it has finished, the number of scanned services will be displayed. The existing favourite channel list will not be deleted when the channel list is updated. To stop the scan before it has finished, press the ENTER button with "STOP" selected.

6. Press the EXIT button to exit. If the signal status is poor, the "No Service found! Check the aerial connection" message is displayed. Check the aerial connection and the try the procedure again

I can't take credit for what I am about to suggest. Another user on this site already figured it out. The power board does not have to be replaced. The problem is faulty capacitors on the board. If you are handy, you can replace them in short order. The bad capacitors are the 1000micro-Farad, 10V capacitors. The tops of the capacitor should be flat, but a bad capacitor will have a slightly dome shaped top. It looks swollen at the top, but it's subtle. The user that originally posted the fix reported that some bad capacitors will also have a brown liquid oozing from the top. Anyway, I had the same problem and I replaced two capacitors this weekend for less than $4. It's worth a try if your unit is out of warranty because if you have a repair man come out, you will take a drumming.

No color on Samsung LCD TV

I have an out of warranty Samsung 40" LCD TV (LE40R87BD) which has been suffering a worsening problem where it does not turn on immediately. At the same time we also started getting problems with the picture colour and brightness when the tv eventually turned on. Finally, after a wait of 45 minutes the the tv started up but with no colour.

A bit of web research suggested that the problem may be with 4 1000uF 10V capacitors on the power board so I took a look under the hood, saw the bad caps and replaced then with higher voltage caps from maplins(1000uF 25V) that others have used successfully.

On powering up, the TV started first time (hooray!) but sadly still did not have any colour. I'd like to know how I might troubleshoot the no color problem

I have tried a factory reset as recommended by broadbents1. I have noticed that when I switch from dynamic to movie mode the screen garbles but does have color.

I have no color on my Samsung Flatscreen TV

The picture of my Samsung Flatscreen TV is now in black and white. Has been now for two days. I've tried the menu button, which comes up in color and reset the settings. Any advice on how to get the color back? Samsung model no. is HP-S5053.

Hello,

This means absolutely no color - equivalent to a black and white picture. Not even a hint of color.

First, confirm that the source is actually in color - try another channel or input device.

Next, check the settings of the color control - it may have accidentally been turned down. If your TV has some kind of automatic picture mode, try turning if off and adjusting the color control. Try adjusting fine tuning if you have such a control and the problem is with a broadcast or cable transmission.

At this point with a confirmed color signal source, there is a problem with the chroma circuitry.

Note that to the average person, the obvious question becomes: is my color picture tube bad? The answer is a definitive NO. It is virtually impossible for a defective CRT to cause a total loss of color. A defective CRT can cause a lack of a primary color - R, G, or, B or a short between two colors which will mess up the color but is not likely to result in a black and white picture.

Some possibilities in no particular order:

Weak signal or defect in tuner/IF causing loss of signal strength.

Coler killer set too high (internal control) if it has one.

Defective part around the chroma chip/circuit. Faulty color oscillator.

Bad connections in area of chroma chip/circuit.

Defective chroma chip (don't suspect this first just because it is probably very expensive).

Try prodding the main board around the chroma chip with an insulated tool to see if you can make the color come and go.

I had one set where a $.02 resistor decided to open up causing just this problem - perfect BW picture, no color. Another had a coil with a broken wire.

This is a comon problem with the Samsung LCD HDTV on the Power Board.

You can repair or replace faulty parts on PS board.

When checking the capacitors, If they are slightly rounded on the top where the X is, the cap is defective. See the Youtube below.

Because the Samsung LNS4051D would not turn on and the power
LED would blink 4 times and the relay would click and this
would repeat again and again. I replaced power supply board
parts CM806, 811, 812 & 817, all 1000 uf 10v capacitors,
three had their tops bulged up slightly that I missed on
initial visual inspection. After seeing the reports of
problems with these caps on
http://www.fixya.com/support/t1336881-will_not_turn_or_off ,
I replaced them with Radio Shack part 272-1032, 1000 uf, 35v.
They are slightly bigger, but fit OK. TV is working fine now.
Cost was 4 x $1.59 = $6.36 plus the time. I saved between
$100 to 300 in the process of either replacing the board or
getting the unit serviced. If you are not comfortable
replacing components which means using a soldering iron, you
can replace the power circuit board, available from
www.Samsung.PartStore.com.

PIP function does not work, the settings is greyed

PIP function does not work, the settings is greyed out also! I have a wii, PS3 and freesat :)

Hi nikkicollier,
PiP for your TV works between two different sources. This means between a component source and an HDMI source or between an HDMI source and another HDMI source. PiP also works with a PC connection, e.g. when using the TV as a computer display. PiP does not work between two component sources. The setting will be grayed out when you don't have a configuration that is supported, as the Samsung TV's are usually able to automatically detect which sources are plugged in and available.
derrickolz.png

I'm not exactly sure what sort of configuration you want your PiP to work in, but try one of the following configurations.

  • TV Cable (through VCR or other via Component input) with Satellite in PiP (via HDMI input)
  • PS3 (via HDMI Input) with Satellite in PiP (via Component Input)
  • Wii via HDMI Input) with PS3 in PiP (via HDMI Input)
You can usually find an HDMI cable for much cheaper at an electronics supplies shop, Radio Shack, or on eBay or Gumtree.
To change your PiP settings:
  1. Press the MENU button on the remote control. Select Picture and press Enter.
  2. Select PIP and press Enter.
  3. Press the enter button again, and press up or down to change the setting to On and press enter again.
    Note:
If PIP is activated the screen will display in widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio.)
  4. Press the up or down buttons to select the Source then press the Enter button.
Select the source of the sub-picture by pressing the up and down arrows and then pressing the Enter button.
Note: The sub-picture can serve different source selections based on the what the main source is set to.
    Note:
You may notice that the picture in the PIP window becomes slightly unnatural when you use the main screen to view a game or karaoke.
You can download the full PDF manual for your TV here (large download at 26MB.) Much of the PIP information can be found on pages 13 and 14.
Good luck, I hope that helps.

This does not seem to be a power supply issue but rather an issue with the backlight inverter board. When the screen goes black, take a flash light and focus it on the screen from a close distance and several angles. See if you notice a very faint image. Try changing the channels to make it more noticeable. Try it and let me know
