It sure sounds like a defective battery to me (one or more dead cells in stack), it takes more voltage to boot up than run once booted, so if the battery is failing that would give the symptom you have. I suggest you have a local Radio Shack test the battery.

Ubuntu is a free product and you shouldn't of have to pay for it (unless you order the CDs). Hold shift while the computer turns on. Select the repair packages option first follow by the boot with file check next.

Sadly theres not many that have solved this problem too. If you can boot to safe mode (by pressing F8 during initial boot) then try running your antivirus from there.
I would suggest downloading the free version from malwarebytes.org.
If that would not solve the problem reformating and reinstalling your OS will be the best move.
