My LG HD tv screen has a wide, gray band on either side of the picture

Try changing 'perspective' or screen ratio. This may work, but could also stretch the picture too wide, On my non-LG TV this is called 'aspect ratio' under the 'picture' menu.

TV won't show picture

The main power supply regulator section circuit fault. Either it will be a separate board, or the part of main board. Check and replace damaged component/s at its main power regulator [SMPS] section circuit. Contact any service technician. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ It will be best to replace the power supply regulator board as card basis rather than making "Surgery" to it; which usually will make loss for both money and time. Even though you can make it right, it will cost around an amount equal to the cost of a new board; including the cost of (spare parts + service charge) More to say, most of the spare parts to it will be difficult to get from open electronic spare part market. This is true to most of the flat panel TV power supply boards; irrespective of its brand and screen size. Search the site by type in the "brand name" to your device; in the "Search box at the top right of the display window of the Homepage" to get gathered related posts.

Use to operate LG TV & DVD player

You have to set both the device with its setup codes, which will differ according to its brand names. To select a proper universal remote control, you should know about the number of digits to its set-up codes. There are 3 digit, 4 digit, 5 digit, 2 digit and even single digit codes, to some brand devices. After confirming this, check the sites linked here. Both the sites have set-up code list and set-up procedure to many popular brand remote controls. Check which brand remote control has set-up code/s to your device brand, and buy that one according to availability? Brand name of the remote control isn't a matter, but it should have set-up codes in its code list, to the device brand you have. Please note: Every new universal remote control will have set-up code list, and set-up procedure along with its pack. Never accept a remote control, that hasn't both of this. For more details about the set-up codes, visit the site http://electrohelponline.blogspot.com/ Check this site too. http://remotesearch.blogspot.com/ Type in the brand name of your device in the search box, and press "Enter". Universal remote controls are available at most of the electronic spare part selling shops.

I have a LG 42LB1DR

I purchased my set about 2 years ago. I experienced the same problems as other owners where the TV would not turn-on or will turn-on but become non-responsive or turn-off on its own after a few minutes. Some other owners have posted comments that the problem is faulty capacitors on the power supply board. I removed the power supply board and noticed that one of the capacitors had a bulge on the top of the cap. The capacitor is green and made by Samxon. The capacitor is rated as 2200uf 10volt. I made some research online regarding this specific capacitor. Apparently, this is a defective capacitor as other people have posted comments online on various other products that use this capacitor as also failing on their products. The power supply board has a total of 4 of these capacitors. I ended up removing all 4 which was really easy to do since they are not small and good size to handle. I was able to locate the a different brand of capacitors online for $2.50 and soldered them to the board. Since I had the TV taken apart, I also upgraded the hard drive with a 500gb Seagate DB35.3 which are hard drives made specifically for DVR's. The TV originally came with DB35.2 which was the previous model. After I was all done with the repair and upgrade, I turned on the TV and it has been working flawlessly. This confirms to me that the problem is caused by the faulty Samxon capacitors used on the power supply board. If you do not want to mess with soldering your board, there are retailers selling replacement boards for around $150-$180 however if you get a new board that has the same Samxon capacitors, I would assume that over time, the same problem will happen with the capacitors failing. As for the hard drive upgrade, the TV accepted the drive with no problem. I can now record 52 hours of HD and 127 hours of SD. Please let me know if you have any questions.
