Toughbook LCD is Dark.

On all Panasonic Toughbooks, any model pre-2008/2009 would have the older LCD screen with an "inverter". The new screens are called LED because there is no inverter. The inverter is like the "ballast" on a fluorescent tube lighting fixture. The tube could be good but if the ballast is blown then the tube will not "light-up". This is also true of the inverter. You can also tell when the inverter is about to burn-out when you first start your toughbook in the morning and the screen is initially "red" and then turns white after the unit warms-up for a few minutes. Good Luck to you. Regards from Richard, Montreal Based Panasonic Canada Authorized Toughbook Dealer since 1989.

My toughbook is on but the careen is black

Did you try to attach an external monitor to the VGA port? Please start by making sure the Power on the Toughbook is completely OFF. Then plug-in an external monitor to the VGA port. Turn the monitor on first, then power-on the CF28 Toughbook. (This is the same procedure for any model of Toughbook). The external monitor only may turn on, or sometimes both the external monitor AND internal LCD may turn on simultaneously. If the external monitor does turn on, then you may be faced with a burnt-out LCD. Good Luck. Regards, Richard - Montreal Based Authorized Panasonic Toughbook Dealer since 1989.

Touchscreen calibration in ubuntu

The touch screen on these models do not have a calibration setting. They work or they don't. If it not working properly you can try uninstalling the drivers for the touch screen, then reboot. The machine will find the touch screen and reinstall the drivers automatically. Also check for any updated drivers at Panasonic's support site. Then check the connection for the touch screen, the touch screen has a separate connection than the screen, and it may have worked loose or have a little dirt or corrosion built up. If this doesn't work, then I'm afraid that the touch screen may be wearing out, nothing you can do for this.

Color Display on Panasonic Toughbook CF-28 is dull

You most likely have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp or simply the video cable needs reseating. After reseating the video cable and the problem is still there then :-
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:

  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display or appear black.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Toughbook will not start, we have it plugged

> battery light turns RED

For Panasonic computers, that indicates that the battery is almost completely discharged (it's YELLOW while charging, and GREEN while fully-charged).

So, my guess is that your AC adapter has failed,
and that your battery needs recharging.

Or, the socket where the AC adapter connects into your computer is damaged, such that no power from the AC adapter is reaching the computer.

Take a "MultiMeter" and check the voltage & amperage output-level from your AC charger. If "zero", go onto eBay and search on the part-number, to find a compatible replacement part.

Battery light blinking red during charging

Dell or Panasonic? Your post has both listed.

If the blinking light on a Dell is yellow or amber or orange (somewhere in that color range) and continues to blink the entire time it is plugged into AC power (wall outlet) and when you unplug it from the wall the laptop immediately dies .... then you battery is dead and needs replaced.

If the blinking light stops after a while (perhaps a minute?) and then turns green while plugged into AC power, then it is successfully charging - or so it thinks.

When you unplug it from the wall, does it stay up and running?
If it runs, it's OK - just ignore the light and plan on getting a new battery one day, start browsing now. :)
If it dies immediately upon unplugging, then your battery is dead and needs replaced.

Have a CF-28

The last three letters of that model number are unnecessary.
CF-28P3JP8QM has the following desription:
PIII 800MHz, 256, 30GB, 13.3"NON-TOUCH, FDD, 56k/LAN, CISCO WIRELESS LAN, PALM ANT, NO 56K, XP/2K
You can look up this info for yourself at
http://config.toughbook.com/
You will need to use Internet Explorer as other browsers don't seem to work on that site.
