1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent

Is your hard drive a Hitachi/IBM? If yes, Compaqs are known for their notorious hatered toward IBM/Hitachi hard drives. It's a compatibility issue over a quarrel Compaq had with Hitachi during the late 1990es. Or you may really be dealing with a dying hard drive. In either case, you'll have to get a new hard drive... or a used one but DO NOT GET A HITACHI. Get a Seagate or Samsung. It would be best if you transfer all your critical data off the hard drive and dont use your computer untill you get a replacement hard drive.

Can you turn on the laptop at all, does it go through the initial hardware tests, can you see the HP logo? Can you go into BIOS?
the nc6xxx series is known for the Maxim chip problem, and your laptop may just have arrived at that time when its Maxim chip needs resoldering. Take a look at this post for more detailed explanation, diagnostics and repair guide for repairing the non-booting, dead HP nc6120 laptop.

My HP Compaq N6120 laptop freezes when the bottom

If you press down on the case just to the right of the trackpad Or if you hold the right side down with you right hand and gently lift the left corner of the machine and it starts to work again... You have what is called the nc6120 Flex/Tilt issue.

The solder points on big Intel 915GME chip on the motherboard is loose.

Sometimes using a heat gun to refloat the chip works.
Not always. If you order a replacement board from HP
you will notice there is lots of red or white epoxy around that chip
to keep it held in place.

More information about the Flex/Tilt issue can be found at:

Take a look at the back of the laptop. Is the gold power pin still there or is it now stuck in in the end of the power brick cord?

HP actually extended the wty on these machines because of the
power pin issues. If the power pin is missing you will need to have the machine serviced. Out of wty, replacement power pins are easy to solder on the board if this is the issue.

If your pin is still there... Your AC cord or power brick may be the next things to check. Connecting them to a meter will tell you if there is power. Try moving the cords to check for shorts in the wires.

If your AC cord and brick are good, try pulling the battery. Your laptop can run off AC only. Batteries with bad cells can sometimes prevent the machine from powering up.

If its still not powering up after all of that, there may be an issue with the motherboard in the machine.

Multimedia audio controller drivers

If you were to log on to the manufacturer's web site, I think you will be pleasantly surprised as usually one is able to download, by model number, Customer Instruction Manuals, list of Dealers, for spare parts and service, Driver downloads and Installation Instructions as required.

Just Google the manufacturer's name and follow the links. Make certain you are directed to the manufacturer's web site as some search engines direct you to other sites and they charge for the information that is normally free of charge.

I hope this helps.

no solution....even Microsoft is unable to fix it....
the solution is to change the motherboard...well that's not an option to just get back sound and spend so much on that....
alternate is buy a 1$ USB sound adaptor and use external speakers....
well the choice is urs...

If you have to ask HOW to disassemble your laptop, I strongly suggest that you take the laptop, and its power-supply, to a qualified technician, for proper & safe trouble-shooting and replacement, if necessary, of the "inverter".
