Have you tried dell's website for any drivers. If there are, reinstall them and see if that fixes it.

Touchpad replacement

On my Inspiron e1505 the left button on the touchpad is not functioning properly, it is intermittent. How difficult is it to replace that component? I have some IT experience.

You can replace the touchpad.

However, the Dell touchpad is part of the "Palm Rest" assembly (See item #4 on this page of the service manual). The "Palm Rest" is a large part which consists of the entire top of the computer surrounding the keyboard).

This is difficult to determine online, because we need to search for "Palm Rest" not "touchpad".

If you are able to, simply
1. Go online via the ethernet plug in port at a friend's place, or if you flash a smile and ask nicely at a place with wi-fi, they will have a hardline plugin as well. This is my first suggestion.
2. You can use a jump drive and go to (my computer is a dell) dell's website and check their drivers page, you can simply search it on their main page along with their support page. Then just look for the appropriate wireless drivers, and save them onto your jump drive, then run them on your computer and bada-bing bada-boom! you should be up and going, I ran into this everytime I reinstalled my OS on my laptop and my desktop :P sux that it isn't more automatic, but if you keep the drivers on a disk or your jump drive you can use them again.

good luck!

Screen goes black when power cord is plugged in.

Screen goes black immediately after booting up....except when just using the battery. If I plug in the cord, the screen goes immediately black, yet it is clear the computer is still working. There have been no hardware changes. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Start by checking the power supply with an ohm meter for the proper output. Anything higher or low than one volt means the supply is faulty and will need replaced. This could also be a battery issue, if a fail safe in the battery has engaged. Try removing the battery and see if it works properly on the supply only, if so, then the battery will need replaced. If these two check good, then I'm afraid the problem is with the power management system on the motherboard, and unfortunately the motherboard Will have to be replaced.

With that little bit of info, you may want to check out a couple of things...

(a) See if there isn't some file-sharing software on there (Limewire comes to mind) and get rid of it.
(b) Try booting to safe mode and running an online virus scan from http://www.bitdefender.com or http://www.trendmicro.com. He may have gotten dinged with something bad that is crashing at shut down. I hope this helps.

My Dell Inspiron E1505's wireless switch seems to be off. I am not able to choose my wireless network I get the message "Make sure the wireless switch is on". I have no switch and pressing the F4 and F2 key nothing happens. I also checked Device Manager. I would appreciate help. Thank you

This happened to me using a Dell Inspiron laptop. The wireless switch was disabled and the answer was supposed to use both the blue Fn and regular F2 function key to enable wireless connection. I tried Fn and F2 together and it did not work. I tried just F2 alone and it worked.

Hello there brennerc.

Here's your GEEK-steer ...

Based on your description I'm not sure which character that is. Are you sure it's located on a standard keyboard? If not, it's what's known as an "extended" character, with which you'll need your Windows "Character Map" accessory to help you locate.

[Start > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map]
... or ...
[Start > Run... > type "charmap.exe" (without quotes), then Enter]

TIPS:

  • Clicking on any character's (square) will initiate a perpetually zoomed popup to help you see it better.
  • Once you find desired character, double-click (or select button) it to place it into the "characters to copy" field, where you can then "copy" (button) it, and then paste wherever desired.
Good luck, and thanks in advance for posting back ...
  • to let me (and others) know how things worked out,
  • if you have any further questions,
  • to provide clarification or feedback.

Call up Dell or go to the web site and talk or chat with technical support. They can look up the error code and pin point the problem. Your laptop might still be under warranty so don't wait until it runs out you better act now.

Good Luck
