I suspect the problem with your dryer is the door switch as opposed to the timer...its the responsibility of the door switch to stop the dryer when the door is opened as well as turning on the light too when the door is opened.

When you have a problem with
your dryer getting too hot, there are many things that could be causing
the problem. Check to see if there is lint inside of the vent hose or
inside the outlet of the wall exhaust. A blocked vent will definitely
cause a dryer to overheat because it does not permit the heat to exit
the machine smoothly. Make sure that you are only using firm and rigid
metal or bendable metal duct according the manufacturers instructions.
Look for kinks within the vent hose. You should also check for any
obstacles or obstructions inside the outer damper.
Make it a practice to check the outside vent damper every other month
or so. Check to see if you can feel a good flow of air being released
out of the exhaust. If not, the blower may be in poor condition inside
of the dryer. Some other possible reasons for overheating include, a
bad operating thermostat, worn, drum seals or a shorted heater coil.
The door switch is sticking. Door switch is around the door opening and is located where the door would push it in when the door is closed. It may just need cleaning or putting back in its rightful place or it may be broken and need replacing.

If you have an electric dryer, you can
have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to
heat.
ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANY WORK ON IT.
Sounds like your problem may be a broken belt, or the belt may have slipped off of the motor pulley, or idler arm pulley or a faulty motor.
If you have to check/replace/repair your drum motor,drum seals,belt,rollers, etc.
If replacing drum seals be sure to use a good grade of weather proof cement to hold the seal/s in place. Note: This method works for most front loading machines. Remove the electrical console that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer. Be real careful not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch or other electrical connections. Remove the lint filter and the screws that hold the filter housing. Then remove the top of the dryer. Note: Some of the tops tilt backwards and do not have to be removed completly. Remove the front of the machine, this will expose the belt and drum, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm bracket with pulley, and motor with pulley. Pay attention to the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt and drum. Sometimes the belt will slip off of the idler arm or motor causing the drum not to turn. While you have the drum out, I would recommend that you lubricate the drum rollers at the shaft of the roller with a good grade of machine oil like 3 in One oil. This will save you a problem later with the rollers getting noisy, also check your drum rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them this will cause a noise like a thumping type noise. You will need to replace the drum rollers if they have flat spots on them.

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating

Here is a tip which may get your dryer back to normal
Check the exhaust vents for obstruction of lint buildup.
If there is such a buildup the moister sensor prevents the heat to get to operating temperature It is a saftey device installed on all dryers to prevent fires to start in the dryert
ok, this is what you can check, manually turn the drum inside to feel if there is any tension, you should feel a slight resistance, if not then your belt has broken, if that is not the case you have a bad door switch but more than likely you have a bad fuse. if your lint filter is on top of dryer, this fuse is located in the back, it is white in color.
One side of the element powers from the timer and the other side from the motor . Remove one wire from the element , and check which wire is not getting 120 V . Trace the wire NOT getting 120V and it will lead either to the timer or the motor , providing that the small t-stat looking piece (thermal cut-off) located close to the top of the heater box , shows continuity . If it does not , then pt # 3392519 is for it and the hi-limit t-stat . If you replace it , then replace both that come in the kit .
First, unplug the dryer, and verify power by plugging something else into the outlet. If it does not turn on, check the breaker. If you have already done this, please read further :)
You need to pop open the top panel of the dryer, you can do this w/ a flat blade screwdriver. There are two places to check, first there is a shut off switch with two wires going to it that connect to the door latch. If that switch is bad it will cause the same issue. Next you will see the main start switch with a couple more wires going to it. One of which will go to the safety switch on the door latch. Disconnect the wires making sure to remember where they go. Pull the plastic cover off of the start switch, and remove the nut that holds in on. Installation is reverse of removal, and is very straight forward.
If the drier drum is still turning I would suspect a separate fuse is open for the heating element. Checking this may require openning the back cover. It may also be a defective or open heating element.
i believe the stains are actually semi burn marks. If you are drying your whites try a lower heat setting. i had this problem with my kenmore dryer before too. Got bad especially with towels. Make sure your vent is not clogged and your filter is cleaned regularly to let the heat flow better. should help.
