Since you have a red wire you must have 10-3 romex. 10-3 has four wires. Three jacketed wires Red, Black, White and a bare copper wire. The is Red and Black are your two 120 legs (both hot) white is neutral and the bare is ground.

If the hotplate 'hot' light is on when the cooktop is completely cooled down then you will need an experienced repair person to fix it. It can be a bit complicated.

On your elements there is a sensor that indicates when the burner is hot. One of the burners has a short on that sensor and that element needs to be replaced.

You either have a bad element or infinite switch. If you are handy you can do a few checks to determine which part is needed or if both parts are needed. On a failed element most of the time you can see a burn/break in the coil windings. You can check for continuity. On the infinite switch you can do a continuity check as well. If you are unsure of the repair I recommend change out both. The parts are affordable and you will have your cooktop up and running sooner.

How long does it take for the light to finally go off?or does the light ever go off when a cooktop decrease in tempreture has to reach the tempreture set by the factory for that light to go off. Sounds like a thermal switch which controls the hot surface light is stuck closed If this is a new unit, I'd return it. If not, I would check the switche(s) for the hot surface light -- when the unit is cold, unplug one wire going to the thermal switch and check it for electrical continuity. most cook tops the light that maches the burner is on if sw is on . if light doesnot fo off replace that sw . if only one light for all burners you will have to fint the shorted one.. good luck mm ..

if its going out, its probably ok
its not a light indicating the burner is on, rather that the glass is abcove 100 degrees and still not safe to put something on
2 hours is a bit long but it depends on how fst the surface can cool of
you can test this by trying to cool it off faster with a fan ans see what happens

Try cleaning the knobs. I did the same thing you did (turning the circuit breaker off but that did not solve the problem.

My wife just tried turning the knobs and that seemed to work. It appears that one of the knobs may have been so sticky that the though it's in the OFF position it thinks it's still ON.
