IOGear GCS634U KVM Switch Questions & Answers
Toggle keys don't work as advertised
Hi David,
I located and downloaded a copy of the
manual and found the details for [Scroll Lock] [Scroll Lock] [Enter] on page 8 that simply says:
"This will switch everything (KVM and sound) to the next port."
There is no mention of this keystroke switching to the next port "only if there is a computer connected" as you indicated in your question. It would seem to me that if the KVM switches to the next port when it receives the [Scroll Lock] [Scroll Lock] [Enter] keystroke - it is working as described in the manual that I downloaded from the IOGear site.
The only remaining commands accepted by the KVM are :
[Scroll Lock] [Scroll Lock] [a] [Enter] which is a 5 second Auto Scan mode
and:
[Scroll Lock] [Scroll Lock] [a] [n] [Enter] which is nearly identical as the a5 second Auto Scan mode - except the the numerical value you type in place of [n] is the number of seconds spent on the next port.
Double check your manual and if you're still having trouble - contact IOGear directly below:

Good luck!
This worked great for a couple of months and now
It may be possible that the KVM has gone bad. Make sure the keyboard is plugged into the keyboard port of the KVM as this is the only port on the KVM that will recognize the hot key commands. If you have ensured the keyboard is plugged into the keyboard port and you have tried multiple keyboard and still experience problems I would assume the KVM is having problems. IOGear KVMs have a three year warranty and their support can be reached by email

This almost sounds like the display setting on your laptop was changed to an external device. Most laptops are designed to be hooked up to an external display, such as a monitor or projector, specifically for presentations. You can alternate the display options in the following ways:
- Laptop display only
- External display only
- Laptop+External clone
- Laptop display + extended desktop on external display (dual monitor setup)
Check your laptop display settings and make sure that it's not in presentation mode (options 2-4) before connecting the KVM switch to it. It may be recognizing the KVM switch as an external display in option 4 mode.

Ok switch to one of the other computers and press the reset button on the switch.. Then press refresh on the monitor and ensure the laptop is disconnected.. If that works your refresh rate is different on the systems.. Right click on desktop and under properties display settings.. Set the refresh rate to 85 htz..
IOgear KVM not working with laptop
First, you have to make sure that the KVM switch is directly connected to your laptop, and NOT to a docking station.
This KVM switch is designed to work with direct connections to the computers.
Second, the light indicator on the KVM switch is not an indicator for power. It's an indicator to see which port is active. If your laptop is connected to port 2, but the focus of the KVM is in port 1, then the port 1 will have a light, not the port 2.
You may also refer to the user manual of the KVM.
Thank you!
Have a GCS634U KVM that keeps failing to switch.
This GCS634U was designed to work with USB keyboards and mice.
First, you need to make sure that your using a direct USB keyboard (no PS/2 to USB adapter).
Second, connect the keyboard directly to the computer and make sure that it's working correctly.
Third, check the connection between the KVM switch and the computers. Try to connect the USB cables of your KVM into different USB ports of the computers.
Last, try to use different USB keyboard to see if the issue is the KVM or the keyboard.
Try to power cycle the KVM switch. Disconnect the KVM from the computers and make sure that there's no even one cable connected to the computers.
Leave the KVM switch disconnected for 10 minutes, then plug it back in. Reboot one computer first and wait until it's fully rebooted. Turn on the second one untill all computers are fully booted up.
If same problem occur, then you need to contact IOGEAR and have them RMA the device.
Thank you and good luck!
I'm using an IOGear GCS634U
I use a mixed monitor situation for my KVM with LCD and CRT displays.
Sometimes I too have issues especially in a dual monitor view..
Just occasionally I find the LCD dropping to the CRT resolution which is lower than the LCD.
I hardly see it at all since updating the graphics drivers on all the boxes connected to the KVM.
Maybe start there first and let us know how you go on.
Any additional information you can gather would also be useful.

It would be very decent of you to consider the quality of our expert’s answers and judge them accordingly as you pass through FixYa.
Thank you
4-port usb kvw switch #GCS634U
The GCS634U is designed and tested to work only with a standard USB keyboard and mouse. However, most wireless keyboards and mice work with it, but they cannot guarantee any specific model or brand that would work correctly.
As you can see, this KVM switch is a bus powered device (meaning it only gets power from the USB ports of the computers). If the computer cannot provide enough power for the KVM switch to function correctly, then the wireless keyboard will be affected.
You may try using the IOGEAR GKM541RA. It's tested to work with the GCS634U. Or you may also try using a self-powered USB hub (meaning, it has it's own power adapter) and connect it in between the KVM switch and the computer. That self-powered USB hub will be the one that will add up power to the KVM switch and help it to function properly.
