First of all, this Notebook is installed with SATA Hard Drive and the drivers for the SATA Hard Drive will not be available with retail versions of Windows XP by default.
I recommend you to try using different OEM versions of XP to install in your Notebook which should work.
Since the Notebook is preinstalled with Windows Vista, the XP Drivers for this Notebook are not directly available from HP.
I had searched some for you which should work.
Download the Drivers one after the other and save them with the name along with the Softpaq Number like the example given below :
Microsoft UAA_33566.exe
So that it will be easier for you to save them and identify.
Save the drivers in one location in the Notebook and double click them once the download is completed.
Make sure that you install the Microsoft UAA Drivers before installing the Audio or Modem Drivers.
Make sure that you install them in the same order I had provided them below :
You need to download the Intel Chipset Drivers for your Notebook from the link below :
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/16023/a08/infinst_autol.exe

Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture(UAA) drivers for High Definition audio :
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33566.exe

Conexant High Definition(HD) audio :
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp34001-34500/sp34200.exe

As the Notebook is installed with Intel graphic Card, you need to download the Drivers for the same from the link below :
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/16944/a08/win2k_xp14363.exe

Download the Ricoh 5-in-one Card Reader Driver from the link below :
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp37501-38000/sp37712.exe

Download Intel PRO/Wireless Drivers from the below weblink:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp34001-34500/sp34489.exe

As I am not sure whether your Notebook is installed with Intel or Realtek Ethernet card, I am providing both the drivers:
Intel Ethernet Drivers :
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33574.exe
Realtek Ethernet Drivers :
http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Realtek-RTLRTLRTLRTL-Driver--WHQL-Download-33009.html

You can also try downloading the Marvel Youcon Ethernet Drivers if any of the above provided drivers did not work :
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software10/COL24713/gs-63707-1/Marvell_Yukon_LAN_Driver_6.36.0.0.exe

Downlaod Conexant HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem drivers from the below weblink :
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33890.exe

Download the HP Quick Launch Buttons drives from the below weblink:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38501-39000/sp38688.exe

Download the HP Pavilion Webcam Driver from the below weblink:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33544.exe

Download the Alps Touchpad driver from the below weblink:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33751.exe

Finger Print Reader Driver :
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp32501-33000/sp32869.exe

Hope these helps...

Sounds like a faulty hard drive that is locking up the system. Take out the hard drive completely and turn on the computer and see if it goes past the HP screen. If it does then the hard drive is bad. If it still locks up on you then reseat the memory one stick at a time in one slot at a time. If this doesnt work then you might be having motherboard issues.

Try these things and let me know what happens and I'll help you further.

have the same problem. if updating the graphics driver doesnt work then it probably is the same as my problem.
HP service center said it's the graphics card or video card but since the video card is embedded in the motherboard, then you will have to replace the motherboard.

Restore the pc to its original condition with HP Recovery Manager if computer can boot to the Windows desktop. Launch the Recovery manager
Note:Before doing recovery try to back up the important data like pictures and documents.
1.Click Start and enter Recovery in the search field. Select Recovery Manager from the list when it becomes available. Allow the action to continue, if prompted. The HP Recovery Manager opens.
Alternately, click Start , All Programs , Recovery Manager , and then Recovery Manager . Allow the action to continue, if prompted. The HP Recovery Manager opens.
1.Click Advanced options , System recovery , and then click Next . The PC will restart and reopen the recovery manager.
Alternately, if Advanced options is disabled, click Next , and then System Recovery . The PC will restart.
1.When the PC restarts, select the System recovery option and click Next .
1.If prompted to use the Microsoft System Restore program, click No , and then click Next .
1.When prompted, select the Back up your files first (recommended) option, and then click Next . Follow the on-screen instructions.
1.When prompted to Recover without backing up your files , please STOP before clicking Next .
WARNING: This is the final opportunity to change your mind about recovering the PC and deleting all the files and programs. Once you click Next , the restore process cannot be stopped
1.If you are satisfied that you want to begin the recover process, click Next . The PC immediately begins formatting the hard drive and destroying all data.
The recovery process may take up to several hours and will return the PC to its original condition. Any custom settings, drivers, software programs and updates, and/or hardware updates are lost and must be reinstalled.
If the PC cannot launch into Windows, it may still be possible to use the HP Recovery Manager on the hard drive to restore the computer to its original operating condition. The Recovery Manager can be launched during the start up process by following the steps below.

  1. Press the Power button to start the PC, and then press the f11 key when the standard BIOS prompts are displayed on the black screen. NOTE: Pressing the f11 key during the startup on a computer with an HP factory image will start the system recovery process even if the prompt is not displayed.
    • If the HP Recovery Manager can access the recovery partition on the hard drive, a prompt to backup the user files before beginning the recovery is displayed. Follow any on-screen instructions.
    • If the HP Recovery Manager cannot access the hard drive to fix any system errors, you will need to use the personalized recovery disc that you created to recover the hard drive to its original condition.
    • If you have not created the personalized recovery disc, or the discs are corrupted, you can order a replacement recovery disc from HP.
  2. When the Recovery Manager starts, follow the instructions.

0XE0EF000E is an error message and means that the boot sector is corrupt or missing.
Re format the hard drive is the easiest way to recover and then restore your data backups.
Place your Windows install disk in the dvd drive and boot up the laptop. Follow the prompts and if the menu asks if you wish to repair your version of Windows, select that option. It may work depending on how corrupt the system is. You may have to let Windows re format and start again.
