Have you tried just plugging it into your Mac? Usually these types of devices simply mount like a CD or Flash drive on the desktop and then you can drag music into it.

It turns on when it is hook up to the computer but wont turn on when its not on the computer

Sounds like the battery is dead or worn out. The computer provides power for it.

The protocol you are using- is it Mass storage or MTP/PTP? Maybe you are using the wrong protocol. if it is an iPod then it's mass storage and you need to browse the device in hidden folder mode (If you're using windows, access "Folder Options" to make the change.
