Model GX5FHTXVB03 - Bottom Freezer - ice buildup

Our Amana/Whirpool fridge is 5 years old and this just happened for the 2nd time. As previous posters explained, the defrost drain tube is likely frozen. Remove all food from the fridge and freezer and unplug it for a day. This will thaw it out. Take the opportunity to clean it inside and out (wipe the interior, vacuum the condenser coils underneath). It may leak on the floor if the drip pan overflows after it thaws, so keep a towel or rag handy. I got this advice from a nice lady at the Whirlpool service number, so this is a common problem. She saved me a service call :-) After a day, plug it back in and reload it. It should work OK. Not necessary to check circuit boards, pump air into the tube, etc unless it still doesn't work It helps to have a 2nd refrigerator handy, in my case a Maytag/JennAir that doesn't have this problem. Note that newer Maytags are Whirlpools also. I will not buy another one of these.

Freezer doesn't cool to 0 even though it's set at -5

There is a fan that blows air past the coils in the freezer. Either the fan is not working or the coils are blocked with ice. Sometime ice stops the fan from turning. listen for the fan spinning by turning the thermostat down. Defrost the coils and fan and see if the frig returns to normal. Sometimes the drain tube is clogged causing ice buildup.

HOW TO CHANGE THE LIGHT BULB IN THE REFRIGERTOR

Hi,

To change a light bulb in the refrigerator, remove the plastic cover that covers the light bulb. This cover should just pop off by simply squeezing the cover gently. Look at the bulb to see how many watts it is and the type of bulb you can buy a new bulb at any home improvement centre. Insert the new light bulb and replace the cover.

If the light on the refrigerator is not working after changing the bulb, unplug the refrigerator. Using a screwdriver, gently pop out the push-button collar on the inside side wall of the refrigerator. There will be two wires connected to the push button switch. Remove the two wires and replace the switch. You can purchase this part at any appliance repair centre that carries parts. Make sure you write down the model and make of your refrigerator and take the information with you before attempting to purchase parts.

Good day,
If it is under 1 year old, then it is under warranty. Sounds as if the defrost system failed, but you will need to call your selling dealer for a warranty service call. It should cost you nothing.
