Apple Power Mac G4 Desktop - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
How do i take out the hard drive
Best thing to do would be to get the exact model information and then search the internet using the model name and the phrase 'how to replace hard drive'.
Why am I having trouble with facebook not fully loading on my pc
Could be your browser and/or Mac OS version. The G4s and even G5 Power PC Macs could only run operating systems up to 10.5.8. Minimum OS for running the latest versions of browsers, such as Safari and Firefox is 10.6. under the Intel chipset. Because the old browsers are slow, sites like Facebook and Google do not always support them.
OS 10.5.8 is more compatible than, let's say OS 10.4.9. Check your OS by going to About This Mac under the apple logo on the left side of the screen. It will tell you what your OS is. Your choices: Upgrade your OS to 10.5.8 or take a giant leap to an Intel Mac and run OS 10.6.8 or later. Eventually your old G4 will not be able to connect to anything because of the browser issues.
If I shut down system it will not start again for a few days. Then I have to push switch on tower and monitor at the same time
It sounds as though you may have a power supply going bad. The photo that accompanies your question is a G4 MDD. Is that the exact computer you have? If so, the power supplies are known to go bad on these specific machines. I had to replace my power supply last year. I would suggest - if your Mac is a MDD - doing a search on that topic. I found very good help at the Apple forums. If you determine the power supply is the culprit there is a gentleman in Austin, Texas who rebuilds power supplies. He sells through ebay and offers a very good and fair deal. His ebay ID is baltimora2000. That's who I got mine from and it is still running well after over a year of use.
Hope this helps you out.
When trying to start, I get a "honk" instead of normal chime and then the light flashes occasionally from dim to bright but computer does not turn on
Here is an old Mac trick that sometimes works. Turn computer on. Hold down (at the same time) Control (Apple key) Option P and R keys. Yes, you may need more than two hands. Hold those keys until you here three or four chimes. Release and wait for the computer to start.
Another trick: Hold down the Option key when starting. You should see your hard drive logo on the screen. Select it, then the arrow on the right and see if it starts.
If you have a backup firewire drive (and you should) plug in that drive, start with the Option key pressed, and see if both drives show up as icons. Select the backup drive, Not plug and play, more like plug and pray,
If none of these tricks work, you could have a memory issue, a power supply issue or a motherboard issue. G4s are real cheap now. $40-$60 You can always pull the hard drive and mount it in another computer. And for your own protection, back up that hard drive to a bootable external firewire drive.

HAVE A MAC G4 THAT I CAN'T INSTALL LEOPARD 10.5.6. HOW DO YOU INSTALL THE OS WITHOUT IT FALLING
Running Leopard on a box that old is not really the optimum thing to do. It's got 64 bit architecture and being a G4 is 32 bit, your box will not take advantage of the speed increase. As a matter of fact, and this is from experience... your machine will slow to a crawl. I wouldn't stick an OS newer than Panther on a box that old. Even Tiger slowed it down to ungodly proportions.

It is possible you have a power supply failure. My MDD was doing the same thing unless I reset the PMU. There is a tutorial here on checking the PS -

Computer will not go into sleep mode
External drives (hard drive, DVD burner, iPod, USB drive), printer, a worn out mouse button, debris in/on the keyboard, and cats are all things that can cause your computer to refuse to sleep (or wake it shortly thereafter). Rule out these first. I have had the same problem in the past. It is almost always one of these that causes the problem.

Hi, Run System Profiler. It's in the utilities folder along with Disk Utility, Have a look at the ATA bus. Does it list both disks or just your start-up disk and the DVD-drive? If your second disk is not showing here then it may well have died. Even if it does show it may still be dead and the only way to make sure is to use a stronger tool than Disk Utility. Unfortunately you may have to buy that and it's cost is not far short of the cost of a new drive.I've known apparently dead disks come to life after a short spell in a freezer inside a sealed plastic bag. Unfortunatley they rarely stay alive for long - just long enough to copy important files!
