If the vacuum cleaner's airways become blocked, the device will automatically shut off to prevent damage. Check for blockage at the power head. It probably runs when not flat because it can suck air past the blockage. If the vacuum's filter is full of debris, the vacuum may lose suction, causing the device to turn off automatically...which I doubt in your case. Be cautious removing the blockage for sharp objects.
