When you start the microwave

Replace the magnetron by the sounds of it. The hum gets louder a second or so into "Cooking", that would comply with the magnetron heaters coming on and working into a dead magnetron. It could be capacitor or diode of course.

A portion of the conrol panel will not register

Hello

OK, unfortunately when you have an portion of the control circuit is not responding, the problem is almost always a short on the circuit itself.

the only way of resolving this problem, is to replace the circuit with a new one. If the unit is still in the warranty period, take it back to point of purchase and get the unit replaced, rather than repaired.

You will also be able to order a new replacement part, and attempt to install it yourself, however i will not suggest you try it if you ave not done it before.

You will be able to order the part needed HERE.

Please fell free if you need any further assistance.

Kind regards
Andrea

Ge spacemaker xl-1800 microwave

That would be model "JVM1540SM1SS".

This is due to overheating of the magnetron.

Attached to the magnetron is a thermostat, which opens to interrupt power if the heat gets too high. Then when it cools, the thermostat closes, restoring power.

An overheating magnetron can be due to:
  • operating oven without cover(s) in place
  • wrong magnetron installed in oven
  • an old or otherwise failing magnetron
  • cracked magnetron magnet
  • improper power line voltage (should be 110-125VAC)
  • foods low in moisture (popcorn & bacon, e.g. - add 1/2 cup of water in rear oven)
  • failed or inoperable cooling fan or hood vent exhaust fan
  • deteriorating foam weatherstripping seals in air ducts or on outside cover
  • blocked air vents (dust, animal nest debris, insufficient free air space behind & around oven, etc.)
  • clogged or greasy charcoal filter or grease filter
  • blocked duct in hood vent exhaust
There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

We have a relatively new (about 6 weeks old) GE

It sounds like a sticky door switch. There are several switches operated by the door latches to keep the oven from operating with the door open. It's possible someone got a little too rough when closing the door, which can cause misadjustment.

Since the oven is so new it will still be under warranty, though. Why not let GE fix it? You just need to tell them it's not working properly. First call the retailer where you purchased the oven. If they arranged installation they probably also handle service. Otherwise you can contact GE's customer service as instructed in your owner's manual to find out how to handle the repair.
