Could be a tension issue.

Try this to see if it helps:
Remove top thread.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Start the top tension set at the midway point and then adjust.
Check that the bobbin is threaded and installed correctly.

Possible thread is wrapped somewhere in the mechanism preventing the machine from moving freely.

try rethreading the machine--use EVERY thread guide
make sure the needle is inserted up into the needle holder and turned the right direction
make sure the bobbin is inserted correctly into the bobbin case and turned the right direction
clean under the needle plate and in the bobbin area for loose thread or lint
make sure thread has not come off the thread take up lever
also the jam could have caused the machine to jump time and needs a timing or a adjustment

Have you tried cleaning and oiling it. Also try changing your needle. Your manual should show you how to do both of those.

The bottom slider on the front panel should move it.

have you checked the knob inside the wheel on the right . If not tightened (hand tight) needle will not move.

Hello Griff

Very likely the thread is kind of bound up in the bobbin area. Just turn the hand wheel a bit forward and backward several times -after you lift the foot. Apply a gentle pull on the fabric and it should "break" loose. Often teh thread is still stretched around teh bobbin and this releases it.
Feel free to reply to this post if this does not do it.

How do you want to adjust it? Is the bobbin thread too loose or too tight?

Singer 7436 -... | Answered on Nov 29, 2014 | 128 views

Go to the Singer Sewing Machine site (singerco). Select Support and Resources at the top, and they have a page where you can enter your model number and download the user's manual free. It will show you how to do that and many other things. Refer to it often!

Twin needle assemblies have to be purchased! When you buy one, you will see that it has ONE needle shaft that goes into the needle clamp, and two needles attached to that. Take a look at the drawing that is next to the top button over the needle shaft area, and it has a rough picture of a twin needle. In other words, it's a TYPE of needle, like a ball point needle, leather needle, jeans needle, etc.

You don't. You need to purchase a twin needle; it has one shaft, and two needles attached.

BUT other things MIGHT be engaged. For instance, I don't know the procedure for buttonholes, but is one of the dials or levers engaged for that? Is your needle all the way up when you try to select a stitch? Do you have a button or dial for a twin needle, and if so, is THAT selected? When something like this happens, you need to start from scratch to eliminate the possible causes one by one. Make sure that you have your user's manual; if you don't have it, you can download it free from the Singer support site, and USE IT--it's your best friend!
