Topand bottom stitches are not even

Could be a tension issue. Try this to see if it helps: Remove top thread. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Start the top tension set at the midway point and then adjust. How to adjust bobbin tension

Be absolutely sure that the problem lies with the bobbin tension. 99.9% of tension problems lie in the "upper tension." If upper thread is creating a birdsnest under the fabric, the upper tension is too loose. If the bobbin tension is pulling to the top of the fabric, the upper tension is too tight. One should adjust bobbin tension only when one is very familiar with a sewing machine. Before changing anything, be sure to mark the position of the bobbin tension adjustment screw first. That way, you will be able to return it to the original position if you need to. When making bobbin tension adjustments, move the bobbin screw only 1/8 of a turn at a time. Test before making any more adjustments. Repeat, test, repeat, test... ...

My machine seems to be struggling to move the needle up and down, even with a light cotton.

Have you tried cleaning and oiling it. Also try changing your needle. Your manual should show you how to do both of those.

When sewing, mechanism sometimes binds. Bigger problem is when finished stitching, the hand wheel binds completely. Is there a mechanical problem or someplace to insert oil?

Hello Griff Very likely the thread is kind of bound up in the bobbin area. Just turn the hand wheel a bit forward and backward several times -after you lift the foot. Apply a gentle pull on the fabric and it should "break" loose. Often teh thread is still stretched around teh bobbin and this releases it. Feel free to reply to this post if this does not do it. This machine is supposed to be able to have twin needles. Where do I insert the second needle.

Twin needle assemblies have to be purchased! When you buy one, you will see that it has ONE needle shaft that goes into the needle clamp, and two needles attached to that. Take a look at the drawing that is next to the top button over the needle shaft area, and it has a rough picture of a twin needle. In other words, it's a TYPE of needle, like a ball point needle, leather needle, jeans needle, etc.

Is there a reset button on my sewing machine?

BUT other things MIGHT be engaged. For instance, I don't know the procedure for buttonholes, but is one of the dials or levers engaged for that? Is your needle all the way up when you try to select a stitch? Do you have a button or dial for a twin needle, and if so, is THAT selected? When something like this happens, you need to start from scratch to eliminate the possible causes one by one. Make sure that you have your user's manual; if you don't have it, you can download it free from the Singer support site, and USE IT--it's your best friend!
