Futura xl400 , top thread is not showing on the embroidery , only the bobbin color

Sorry to ask, but did you make sure the machine is correctly threaded. If I am not mistaken with the new smart threading system you need to hear a click when going down to the needle. If not the machine is not moving the needle correctly to be able to pic the bobbin thread. Also try to change both threads, (bobbin and upper thread). Some brands are better than others.

Thread not coming back up from bobbin

It can be very frustrating if your machine is not sewing properly. This guide is about sewing machine needle not catching thread. And check the needle correct position or bobbin winding correctly . Also try using the same thread in top & bottom.

It gathers all the string in the bottom

Check the bobbin to see if the thread on it is wound tightly. If it's not, then rewind the bobbin. Plastic bobbins tend to get nicks in the edge of them which can catch the thread. Try switching to a metal bobbin.

Thread Tension

Are you using a plastic bobbin? I had that problem using plastic bobbins, Switched to metal bobbins and it solved that problem. Also check to see if your bobbin's thread is wound tightly around it. If you can 'squeeze' the wound thread and it feels like it's not firm, the bobbin might need to be rewound.

Hand wheel stuck

Check to see if the needle is jammed into the fabric. Try pushing the REVERSE on the machine and give a little push to the hand wheel.

The needle and fabric are stuck

Here are some ideas:
  • Try reversing your stitching,
  • Pull the fabric gently on either side of the fabric in the needle to see if it loosens it from the area.
  • Remove the needle from its holder (usually held with a thumb screw) and pull gently. Snip the thread and pull a little more to remove the needle. Rotate the wheel on the side of the machine to see if that loosens the fabric.

Thread jams in bobbin case

Open the bobbin area and make sure it is clean.

Change to a new needle.

Thread the machine with the presser foot up.

Make sure the bobbin thread is feeding in the correct direction from the bobbin spool and through the guide on the bobbin case.

Take hold of the end of the top thread and lower, then raise the needle to pull the bobbin thread up.

Take hold of both thead ends and pull them under the presser foot and to the back of the machine.

Place fabric under the presser foot. Lower and hand walk the first couple of stitches.

When sewing, and you need to stop to adjust the fabric, make sure the needle is down into the fabric. This will keep the stitch from malformation and causing a possible tangle.

If you need a manual, you can download one free at the Brother website.
