Ethernet connection works but wireless does not

Unfortunately what sounds like is the "brief" power outage caused the router to malfunction. Hooking up to a surge protector does not help because it was not a surge, but an interruption. With electronics, you must allow adequate time once they are turned off before they are turned on again or risk the possibility of failure. The brief blip in the outage caused the router to malfunction.

Connection

I can't promise this will help but I can tell you it was the solution for me, I do however have the WNR834Bv2 router.
My lan setup consists of a win2k fil/print/sql server, two boxes in my kids room(wireless), two pcs in my bedroom(wired), and one old laptop in the living room(wireless).
Out of the blue one day the lan connectivity on the wireless machines became incredibly slow and in some cases died completely.  Rebooting would sometimes get a re-connect, sometimes not.   The wired machines were completely fine however.
After much research, the first solution *appeared* to be a master browser issue.  Basically you turn off the computer browser service on all machines which are not designated the master browser.  Research master browser for more detailed information.
I saw an immediate increase in network speed after applying this change to all machines, but not soon after, connection/speed problems returned.
In retrospect, I believe this happened because as part of my attempt at fixing the problem as a whole, I upgraded my firmware for the router to the latest version:  http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wnr834bv2.asp#

I say this, because once I decided to revert the firmware to the version it came with as a test, my connection and speed problems completely disappeared, and I have had no problems since.

Hook up

Hi Cheryl,

From your cable/dsl modem please take the cable that comes out of it that looks slightly larger than a phone cable and plug it into a port on your NetGear Wireless Router that is labeled either Internet or WAN. After that is done, unplug the power to both your cable/dsl modem and your wireless router. Plug the power back into the cable/dsl modem and wait about 30 seconds then do the same with the wireless router.

Next on your computer, there should be a wireless icon by your clock near the bottom right corner of the screen. If you double on it, you will see a list of connections, yours will say Netgear and should have a good signal strength. Double on it and give it about 10 seconds to connect. Voila, you should be on the Internet.

Please let me know if this solves your problem.

Thanks,
Adam

Lost internet connection

If that Toshiba laptop is not in use do you still experience that problem?
You may change wireless channel in your router.
Do a firmware upgrade for your router as well.

Hope this helps!

Cannot connect wireless device

If you have the correct wireless security and the laptop wont connect wirelessly, the best thing that you can do here is to access the router setup page and change some wireless settings on the router like the wireless channel , I advice you set the wireless channel to 11 then after that try to connect your laptop again to the wireless network and by the way change also the SSID or wireless network name of the router....

Problem w/ WNR834B router and Open iConnectAccess621 modem

If you previously had your computer connect to the modem, and are now trying to plug in the router, you'll probably have to clone your pc's MAC Address. See one of my first posts in my username account history for a more detailed process.

Problems with my new WNR834B

try to customize your wireless settings. change the wireless name/ssid to something else and change the wireless channel as well. verify also if there's a wireless security enabled, if it has you need to use the correct wireless security/network key when connecting your laptop wirelessly. you can go to the router's setup page to verify your wireless settings by typing the ip address of your router to the address bar of your web browser, http://192.168.1.1 (note: by default the ip address of the router is 192.168.1.1 unless you have changed it to something else. the default username is "admin" and the default password is "password")

hope this'll help you

ciao!

Internet but can't see other machines on the network

If you have a switch or would be able to borrow one from someone. Try connecting your computers to it and see if they can see each other. If they can then that means there is a problem with the switching part of your router which normally means a hardware problem on the router.

No signal

Whats your address? I am only interested so I can wait under the window =)

Seriously though, get a copy of a program called "Netstumbler" and run it on your PC.
It will show any wireless networks within range. The problem may not be your network so much as it could be another network that is interfering with the channel your's is set to.

Remember that wireless is a low powered form like a microwave. If you have cordless phones, microwave ovens etc close to it, then it can go nuts.

Hope it helps =)

Get booted off

Ok. i have the exact same problem, but i use linksys. I have has geeksquad and they dont know. I have only one option i havent tried. try to just hook up the modem to your router only. Buy a wireless adapter for your home computer. If it doesnt work, return it for a refund. I feel for you guys because i have been going through hell and it drives me crazy that even geeksquad doesnt know. (By the way dont buy that garbage when the people say you need a new router, because they just want more money.)
