there is a lip at the top of the tiny window on the front. Pull it forward like you would pull a file cabinet drawer open. it might take a bit of muscle if it's jammed full of shreddings.

First, look for any screw holes if not then it has an interlocking clips... so be careful when removing it... use proper tools

Cleaning of the paper sensors is essential. Blowing on the center of the paper insert area will clear the paper fibers near the sensor but not all. Since my shredder was way past warranty, I opted to remove the 7 screws on the back of shredder mechanism, gingerly remove the shredding mechanism from its seat and there I found, wedged in between one of the sensors, a solitary paper fiber. That ominous, evil paper fiber was wedged in so tight that even the jet engine blasts from a 747 aircraft would have not dislodged the paper fiber. Making use of a Qtip, I dislodged the paper fiber, cleaned out all remaining paper fibers in and around the inside of the housing, then reassembled the unit. It has worked satisfactorily since then.

I FIXED MINE!!! Hey folks same problem AS1018CD would not shut off. CURE: Take apart and clean electronic eye. PROCEDURE: 1. Unplug. 2.  Remove shredder and turn upside down. 3. Remove 6 phillips head screws on back of unit ( 1 is under sticker in middle peel back sticker to access screw. 4. Carefully separate unit. 5. Pull off shredder piece. It is a snug rubber grommet fit and just lifts off( gears everything comes off as one piece. 6. Electric Eye is exposed remove screw holding in and gently slide out and wipe clean. Do both sides. While apart clear all debris and wipe entire unit as clean as you can. Put gear assembly back on grommets. Put top and bottom back together. Replace screws. Plug in. FIXED :-)

My boss has a shredder that will not run unless the bin is exactly centered in the bottom of the unit. There is a safety switch inside there, and a magnet to activate it. Make sure nothing is interfering with the bin or the shredder fitting together. On other units, there is a slot that must match up with the shredder. It will only work one way. See of the shredder will turn around and put it on the bin the other way.
